  • New Paint Different colors?????

I justed had my two passenger doors resprayed at my local bodyshop. When I picked it up it looked great but when i got home and checked it out in the sunlight I noticed it wasnt it was a little darker. I assumed the new paint would not match perfectly because I have used so many different products on the old paint. I brought it back and he showed me the can of paint and it did match the factory. I told him I was unhappy with the job and he replied that he only charged me $100, which was a great deal I think. The average person would look at my jeep and not notice but any real car guy would notice.I have been losing sleep over it and I wish I never had it done but I removed the side molding to uncover paint sprayed over the adhesive.I had no choice but to get it painted. The doors were painted 2 months ago so I really havent played with the paint. What should I do? I have a DA with about 90% of meguiars consumer products and a few from the professional line. I will try to upload pics but I have not done so before...maybe someone can help me out....THX

Your 'old' paint has likely faded in the sun...

The old paint is not dull at all..the newly repainted doors look dull compared to the rest of the car. The original paint looks 10 feet deep compared to the new painted doors.

So the new paint is darker, but also dull, low gloss?

The new paint is just a shade darker....somewhat dull and less glossy then the rest of the car. Since the new doors were painted I have clayed, compounded, polished & waxed the rest of the car, I am too afraid to touch the new paint because the guy at the body shop said wait 3 months before using any chemicals on the fresh paint.

Yes, it is best to wait 3 months before waxing new paint.

But washing, claying, and a mild cleaner would be ok.

At any rate, there may be two seperate issues:

            1. Darker - No matter how well you take care of your paint, it will fade. So new paint from a can will be darker. However it does tend to 'catch up' quickly.

            2. Dull - Now dull could be from many things... Have to get the more experienced painting guys in on this end. Do you know if it was sanded at all?

If it doesn't match now, it simply is never going to match. Just the because you have a can of "factory" paint that doesn't guarantee anything. Sometimes the factory switches formulas during production. A skilled paint and body man is an artist who will use his talents to make a match. If your Jeep is a metallic color the likelihood of getting a good match is even worse. I suggest requesting a repaint. if the repaint doesn't match, take it as it is. The more layers of paint you lay on a vehicle the more problems you will have. This is the fact of life. Sorry... Been in your position lots of times in the last 50 years.

It sure sounds like a $100 job.

The new paint is always "different" color than the original; even the painter is using factory paint code to purchase paint, it is very common in the auto refinishing industry to have many different variables per paint code. For example, my Lexus RX350 pearl white has 3 different variables from PPG, and dupont's matching color don't even come close to matching ( even it is matching to factory code ), but requiring technician to manually mixing and spray-testing the paint few times to adjust to the closest match. Even you find the closest matching paint, it is still not 100% matching, and also many other factors can change the color after painted, such as type of spray gun used, temperature, air pressure, type of clear coat used, etc. It is now painter's ability to create matching by how to hide the color well into the original factory paint. That is what you truly pay for.

As of now, you really can't get matching color but living with it. Or, repaint the car by a truly professional painter. It sounds to me that you will have to have both doors repainted, plus blending the new paint into front fender and rear quarter panel, then clear coat the whole side of car. If the painter can do his job right, and use the right products, then you will have matching color.

Yep, and make sure that the area is well prepped. This requires careful sanding not just scuffing with a Scotch-Brite Pad. Paint buildup can be a serious problem. As an aside, what model Jeep do you have...year and color too? Dark metallic green can be a son-of-a-gun to get right.

If you want perfection, better find a darn good painter. Another thing to consider...your Jeep is fourteen years old. Is it worth the "big bucks" for a a better repair? Are there other paint flaws? Sometimes with an older vehicle it's simply time to not try for perfection. Just keep it clean and waxed and call it "good enough" and drive the wheels off it.

Pearl could be the 3 stages paint, which has extra pearl effect coat ( mid-coat ) on top of the base color coat. If it is, then you really need a good painter who can handle pearl well, and it will cost you quite a bit of money to get it done right.

It seems like pearl paint is tough to match...Oh well.I would say it is probably 95% close match, (wanted 100%)but its my daily driver and nobody will notice because they will be staring at my polished wheels and mirror like shine on the rest of the car. Thanks Meguiars for mirror like shine!!!!You can only notice it in the direct sunlight, other than that it kind of blends with the rest of the car until you stare at it.

You know that you have OCDD (obsessive compulsive detailing disorder) when you start to notice other folks mismatched paint jobs. There are lots of them. I know. Matching paint is one reason my vehicles are always black or white.
