  • Severe sun damage advice needed: Pics Posted

**Apologies for starting a new thread, I'm unable to edit my previous one right now (the one without pictures). I'll remove the old one as soon as I'm able. Thanks.

I just got this 95 Passport for 500 bucks. It's mechanically sound, but the paint is a disaster!

The Florida sun has obviously destoryed the clear coat on the hood and roof. I realize that there's really no way to get the finish on these areas looking great. There is also some scratching around one of the rear windows. I would, however, like to do something to make it look a little better, even if it only lasts a few months.

What product(s)/processes would I be able to use to get it looking more presentable. I am willing to do work, but don't want to spend more than 100 bucks or so on products. What are your thoughts? What are realistic results to expect?

    Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

Damage to the paint is extensive.........But if you want to get some out of it you can try
    Meguiar's Paint Restoration Kit....

This will help to get an initial cleaning towards a better paint
and will point out damages on the surface.......

Is it even worth trying products on? Any idea of what the hood might look likeif attempted? Just looking for it to appear a little more black.

Sorry; don't have a link about it.........
              Quick advice....
Bucket----water----a little soap------600 grit sand paper (10 sheets)

              sand it down!!!

You favorite hardware store..........black enamel paint (a gallon) mineral spirits (quart)
some fine rollers and you will be suprised and happy with your new SUV.......
If you or a friend can shoot the paint with a compressor great,
if not rollers will do it........Good Luck!!!

Nothing short of a respray will fix that paint. It's shot. You can polish and wax the base coat but it will still look like junk. Nothing you can do for $100 bucks will do any good. The cheapest Earl Scheib type paint job will be around $600. If the vehicle is worth it mechanically then plan on a respray. Maybe you want to attempt a roller paint job. The plus is that you can paint it for $100. The bad is that will look like a $100 paint job.

Good info. I'll do some research and figure out what I want it to look like and how much to spend.

I'm seriously considering it, guess it depends on how crazy I am. Can't look any worse right? I'll keep everyone posted.

I remember a thread a while back about painting a car with Rustoleum. It looked very good when finished.

Well, I spent the better part of last night watching videos and reading everything I could about the "Rustoleum paint job". I'm pretty convinced. If I can secure the garage space from a friend for a long weekend, I think I'm going to do it.
