  • Door Jamb Residue

I need some assistance on the best way to attack these door jambs:

I've been lurking, er, reading these forums for a couple of years now and it seems like everyone but me can remove this kind of buildup. I've seen recommendations for APC agitated with various brushes, etc. but whenever I try this method as soon as I touch the gunk my brush gums up and nothing moves. It's sticky almost like sap so even wiping it with a towel soaked in SD just smears it. I currently have on hand APC, APC+, and SD and will be placing an order with ADS this week so can pick up something else if necessary.

It's basically a build-up of lubricant from the hinges with dust/dirt/grime/fine grit that just needs to go. I just finished polishing the paint and am swirl free so now these jambs stick out like crazy.

I appreciate the help of the awesome MOL members.

Looks & sounds like you need a strong grease cutter but I'm not sure what to recommend. Maybe something that's used to clean engines, like Gunk?
I don't know what effect it might have on your paint though; maybe 'ask the doctor' on their site: http://gunk.com/

      An idea...use brake cleaner.

Spray some on an old rag and just use your finger to agitate the crud. Then use an APC and water to remove the BC. Those long parts cleaner brushes work (for me) well. Oh, if you have a clean garden spray, the pump up kind, just using water in those are nice for lite application of water wash down.

Word(s) of caution...DON'T just spray it in there...BC and paint do not (normally) play well together. Wear rubber/latex/nitrile gloves.

I would try a Bug & Tar remover like Body Solvent from the Detailer Line. You will have to carefully re-lubricate your hinges afterward however.

I have seen posts regarding removing sap/bug residue from vertical surfaces. I have tried a variation:

Take half-sheets of a paper towels:

          - Dip in a solution of APC (or whatever is recommended here)
-Apply to jamb like wallpaper & press into crevices.
          - Keep spraying with APC
[As long as not too wet or too dry, they will adhere.]
-After a few minutes, try and lift off the grease
          -Repeat, adjusting strength of solvent/time.

Let the product do it. I did it like this more for "least aggressive to achieve the desired" result" [that I learned here] thought of getting gunk on paint brought tears to my eyes. Not real good a remembering quotes either.

now I think I might have to wax them.....

Stoner's Tarminator and a couple old microfibers did the trick nicely, followed up with an ONR wipe.
