  • DA Pads 101

I did a quick search but couldn't really find the most up to date and pertinent information. I'm looking into getting a DA after doing my first correction on my car last week using an orbital polisher.

I am just unsure of what pads I should get with the DA - what is the difference? I am aware that the colors of the pad indicate the agressiveness of the pad itself (black being least agressive, yellow a little agressive, and the burgundy being the most agressive and not recommended with DAs).

However theres a bunch of other stuff the DA Buffing 101 doesn't address. The following are some of the pads I have seen available for purchase:

    W8207 yellow soft buff 2.0 7''
    W9207 black soft buff 2.0 7''
W7006 burgundy softbuff NOT 2.0 6.5'' cutting pad
W8006 yellow softbuff NOT 2.0 6.5'' polishing pad
W9006 beige softbuff NOT 2.0 6.5'' finishing pad

Is soft buff NOT 2.0 outdated and not used anymore? What advantages does Soft Buff 2.0 have over the older models? Is a 7'' pad the standard size pad now?

How does the product number work?
I assume the first number 9 means least agressive 8 more agressive then 7 most agressive?
What about the last 3 digits? 200 means softbuff 2.0, where as 000 means the older models?
The last 2 digists indicated the size of the pad? 07 means 7''? etc.

I would like to know the above in order to find some 4'' pads as well - would they be W8204, W9204 etc?

If I understand correctly, the black pads are for applying sealants and waxes, where as the yellow ones are for paint correction products, correct? If this is the case would a pure polish be applied with a black pad, and a polish/cleaner such as Ultimate Polish be applied with a yellow pad?

I have read something about MF pads, are these better than the soft buff 2.0 - should I get thoses instead? I was originally thinking 3 yellow and 2 black pads for starters. Does this sound feasible?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thank you!

Listen to the Master of Microfiber and do yourself a favor by getting the new MF system.

I also recommend the DA Microfiber System, and I have DAMF products in addition to the traditional foam pads.

If not for all my foam pads I'd be on the MF system myself.

            Re: DA Pads 101

So considering I have pretty much a new bottle of all of the Ultimate Line and some others, should I get the MF cleaning products or is it ok just to get the MF pads.

The link that Kevin Brown posted also states that I should buy a backing plate to go with them. The backing plates - are they universal. In the sense that if I buy a backing plate is it guaranteed to fit the DA I purchase?

Also, I am seeing a lot of different models and prices on DAs recently. What should I be looking for or comparing between models to help make a decision. I see some that are like $150 and some that are like $250-300. Different makes models etc.

            Thanks for the help!

I would like to know if you could use other products with the MF pads or should you stick with D300-D301
