  • UC/PC/Gold Class Polish Poor Results???

    Hello all!

So I can replace a motor in a few hours but am new to really "trying" to get a great shine. Here is where I am at:

I have a 2000 dark blue Bonneville that spent its life in Nevada sun. It surprisingly is not that bad as far as oxidation from the sun. But it was past a simple wax job. I bought a Craftsman 6" polisher with just a rubber backer. I am using MF bonnets on it and loved what happened after using the UC product. Removed the oxidation great. But once I moved on to the UP it looked worse than before. I have never done all this before so I moved on to the Gold Class Carnuba wax and no better. What am I doing wrong here. Is it the MF pads? Is it the rubber backer on the polisher? Do I need foam?

The polisher is the kind that looks like an angle grinder with variable speed.

Please help I'm lost and actually trying here.

    Thanks so much!!!!

Am I not getting the UC off enough or correctly? I'm just using a bath towel.

for a start definetely dont use a bath towel to remove the UC, use a high quality microfibre like a supreme shine. I wouldnt use MF bonnets for wax or polish either i would just apply by hand with foam pads or with foam polishing or finishing pads by the machine.

A random orbital buffer is NOT the tool for removing defects...and especially not with the microfiber bonnets. That combo is good for removing a thin layer of wax and that's about it.

You will either need a dual action polisher or do it by hand for best results...unfortunately that orbital isn't much use in this situation.

As for towels, a bath towel can definitely cause marring or scratches itself... you want to stick with a clean microfiber towel for that job if possible.

I'm not using one of those 10" random orbital cheap things from the parts store. This is the sander/polisher that looks like an angle grinder.

So you are using a machine that, unless you are highly skilled with, can instill more swirls and damage to the paint than was there before. That type of tool paired with microfiber bonnets is not what you want. Unless you have a lot of experience with a direct-drive, rotary type polisher, you should stick to a dual action polisher or by hand, along with the correct pads.

OK. What are the correct pads. No shops here have real detailing supplies. Also, I want to learn how to do this right so I have no problem spending a few bucks and I have a couple extra hoods around I can practice on. Is a direct drive like I have a good polisher or should I start my learning with something else?

Do you know the model number/name of the polisher?

To get good results you need.

Right tools for the job (DA)
Right products for the correction that is needed.
Right steps (Did you clay first?)
                    Work in small sections. (2x2)

People think their way will work but in some cases it's done wrong and with that they get poor results.
                    Pics would sure help.
It's not as easy as one would think, I spent 30 hours total on my truck to get the results I wanted.(8 hours just to clay it)

                    Washed.
                    Clayed.
                    UC
                    UP
                    UW

Worked for me but might not work for you, depends on many things.
