  • Removing Hair Line Scratches

Hi all, getting my GTO ready for a show this weekend and noticed I have a lot of really light scratches in the finish. The paint and clear is Spies Hecker about 3 years old. I have only used Zaino products on the finish with what I thought was a really soft micro cotton towel from Macy's that I trimmed all the edges off and washes a few times.

I also have some sort of **** on the paint that Im wondering if is from the clay bar but Im more concerned about the scratches. The paint is super slick and I was told this would be a problem but never thought it would be this bad.

I figured a good wash, clay, then polish would fix it up but it didnt and really dont want to color sand and buff the whole car. Im also wondering if the towels didnt cause the problem but I couldn't find anything softer. Any ideas Thanks

Would like to ask a couple of questions to aid in the discussion. Did you just notice the scratches? Did you change something (process or product) in how you maintain your car?

You mention a micro cotton towel. I'm unfamiliar with micro cotton. Is it an automotive towel? Microfiber or cotton? What were you using before this towel? How do you care for this towel? Did you wash it differently lately?

You mention you had something on the finish from clay that is not scratches. What clay did you use and what did you use for a claying lubricant?

How did you wash and what products (automotive soap, mitt) did you use?

What polish did you use and are you working by hand?

Although for this discussion, how you got the scratches may not be as important to you as getting rid of them for the show!!

The towels are bath towels from Macy's and labeled as micro cotton. They where the thickest, softest towels I could find. I buy them, trim the edges, wash them a few times and dry them on low heat with no fabric softener.

I have only used Zaino products (wash, clay, polish) on the finish. As for lube on the clay I used some zaino wash with water in a spray bottle. Im not so worried about the clay as Im sure I can clay again and get it off.

Again I use the same kind of towels for everything (I have a bunch) but designate a towel for washing one for drying, one for polish, and finally one for detailer. If they are dropped on the ground they are trash. Before I even dry I blow the car with a leave blower that is only used for that so its clean.

I really just noticed the scratches recently but the car was covered all winter so....and Im polishing by hand. I have no problem with Meguiar's but dont really use it. Here is a link to the stuff I use *Edit* hope that doesn't get me the boot LOL

It won't get you the boot, but we do ask new members to reach 30 posts before posting any sort of outside link. So thanks in advance for understanding
