  • Help with holograms

I posted this on another forum, but need more advice.
This weekend I did a 2007 Dodge Magnum RX Hemi, black metallic with swirls and holograms.
Washed & clayed. I used a Flex 3401 & Griot's 6". I used Meguiar's MF cutting & polishing discs with speed 2 1/2, D300 & 301. On the Flex I used the MF polishing pad with D300, I got most of the swirls out but still had holograms and a bit of haze. I followed that up with the MF polishing pad, Flex and D301 then NXT 2.0. When the sun came out, the holograms were still there though not as bad.
This was the first time I've tried to remove holograms and I was a total failure. I think I'm missing a step or something.
I did an alcohol wipe down between the D300 & 301, should I have done another one before the wax?
I'm also thinking I should have switched over to a w8207 pad on the flex and M205.
    Some professional advice is appreciated.

    Re: Help with holograms

I was able to remove holograms caused by the body shop and their high speed Dewalt rotary buffer using Ultimate Compound and Meguiar's G110. SwirlX can also successfully remove them if they're not severe.

UC finished well so I followed with M07 and NxT Tech Wax 2.0 .

We're a bit confused here - which machine did you use at speed 2-1/2? That might be OK on the Flex, but nowhere near where you need to be on the Griot's. And since you have both tools and are using the DA Microfiber Correction System, put the Flex away for now and stick with the Griot's DA - the system was developed for use on a DA and the forced rotation action of the Flex can create excess hazing.

Affix a DMC5 cutting disc to the tool and set it at speed 4, then properly prime the disc with D300 before starting your actual correction. Slow arm movements and plenty of pressure will do the trick, just be sure to keep your work area down to no more than 2' x 2'. When finished removing the holograms you may notice some light hazing to the paint, but the DMF5 finishing disc with D301 will take care of that quickly and easily. If you want a coat of NXT on top of all this, then switch to a foam finishing pad and use that to apply NXT.

        Re: Help with holograms

        Thanks Michael,
Sorry I wasn't totally clear on everything. It was the Flex that I used speed 2 1/2 with the polishing pad. I used that combination after reading Nick Chapman's post where he suggested using that combo.
I've been using the Griot's with 4" pads.
I guess the new MF pads and the Flex just aren't working out. That's a shame because the Flex is just a pleasure to work with.
Thanks again for your expertise. Guess I'll get to do the car over.

I have another question. Do you think it's necessary to go back and start from the beginning with the Griot's 6", cutting pad & D300, or should I go back with an alcohol wipe down, Griot's 6" with a polishing pad & D301. It's amazing how big a Magnum is once you start buffing.

Flex has this forced rotation action which makes things more complicated. DA MF Correction System works best with regular random orbital action of dual action polishers.

You can try your Flex XC 3401 VRG with 6" MF discs (instead of 5") and they should finish better with less haze. However it depends on paint type mostly.

            You can't go wrong with your Griot's 6" DA - just keep the right speed setting: D300 - 4800 opm, D301 - 3800 opm.

If the defects are still there (holograms) you need to go back to step 1 - correction with D300/ MF cutting disc/ DA polisher/ 4800 opm.

I really didn't want to hear that, but it must be done. BTW I'm using 6" MF pads, and thanks for your input.
