  • Help Help Help....IDK whats this

Hi guys... Newbie here and please dont "flame" on me. I got the Meguiar's DA polisher and the MF Sytem kit and used it this morning. I was almost done with the correction process and decided to do 3 more passes on the hood. Kaboom saw a white line at the edge part my hood. Its less than an inch or inch long and I know I can use a sharpie to cover it but can I do something about this.

Did I do it too much or too much pressure? FYI.. over all I did pretty good with my car its just this one that I f****d up

    Here are the pix

    and here's my car

Looks like burn through to me, unfortunately. The thing is, if all you did was make a few passes with the MF system, whoever painted the hood (looks aftermarket to me) DEFINITELY cut corners and didn't put down enough paint.

I had a similar problem on an aftermarket painted trim piece... burned through with M205 Ultra finishing polish...definitely not my fault.

Any chance you can approach the painter?

      @ Mark...No its not aftermarket

Correction: I did 2-3 sets of passes....and decided to do 1 more set. Do you know what Im saying?

      Can I still save this?

It's so strange that only one little area got exposed to the primer. First indication would be that the hood was re-sprayed, as Mark said, but it could also be due to some intense buffing and paint removal in the past.

It looks like you need to either touch up that area or repaint the panel.

That's a pretty well-done C63, love the grille. Oh wait, this isn't MBWorld?

Oh okay, yeah...the MF system isn't that aggressive unless you were using a lot of pressure? Or maybe like everyone else says and it's painted...

The MF system is strong enough to remove some decent scratches. The edges usually have less paint than a flat panel and are more subsiptable to burning through the paint. Did you use heavy pressure around that area as well? So you did a total of 4 passes using the D300?

Ok...well, wow. For one, that's a wild bodykit/hood to be factory... very interesting.

Do you know if this car has been buffed on before? Are you the original owner?

Even 2-3 passes with the MF system shouldn't have gone through if that is truly un-touched factory paint.

Mark, Body kit is aftermarket but not the hood. I remember now, I had my lower part of my front bumper re-sprayed and after a week I went there again to have it buff and noticed an overspray on that part of the hood and he buffed it with a rotary. Mike from 101 class mentioned to me that some painter knows how to paint only and does not know how to polish/buff do it the right way. I feel good and bad now, good that it's not my fault (so I did a good job) and bad coz he fcked it up.

Re: Help Help Help....IDK whats this

OK, so there was some overspray on the hood and the body shop used a rotary and wool pad to buff it off, right? This is a case where you probably could have done the job yourself with some clay and a little Quik Detailer. The huge difference is that claying won't take off any paint, and rotary/wool buffing will. In the case of this raised edge, it may well have taken off a significant amount of paint, and your aggressive multi pass follow up would then finish the job (or finish the error, as the case may be).

What is really, really unfortunate here, and what the rest of you guys can't see, is that this car was pretty badly swirled up before Manila Ice started. I remember this car from our 4/16/11 Saturday Class so overall you did an incredible job bringing it back. But this one little spot is almost tragic - you can't really prove the body shop did it, and you've subsequently buffed it fairly aggressively, so we highly doubt you'd ever be able to get the shop to pay for a repair.

So we think this is going to be a "lesson learned" situation, in both a good and bad way.
