    TDS - is not the way to measure hardness. Other factors influence hardness! Hardness is Ca & Mg (calcium, magnesium) ion concentration dissolved in the water. Note both Ca & Mg are metals & have a double + charge. Water softeners exchange/replace Ca/MG with Na (sodium) which is also a double + metal ion.
