  • Used polish before compound...

    Hi all,

So, I decided it was time to get the nasty oxidation off of our 2002 530i BMW (it's only on the hood) and did a ton of research on products before I decided to test first Scratch-X 2.0 and then Ultimate Compound. Washed and clayed hood and then did a test patch of both and of the two, U.C. gave the best results. Followed through on the patches with Ultimate Polish -- absolutely gorgeous results!

Here's where I got a little...hairbrained. When I started to use the U.C. again on the rest of the vehicle, I encountered resistance. Having read that it was helpful to put a polish on the car to aid in using compound, I then polished the entire hood with Ultimate Polish. Here's the...hairbrained...part -- apparently that technique is only used for single-stage paint, not for clear-coat. As a result, the U.C. no longer is effective on the car and basically just smears around or dries so hard I can't remove it. If I time it -just right- I can get it clear after 8 or so tries but it's unpredictable and for the most part there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how to get it off.

I tried claying again, I tried washing again, I tried using Deep Crystal Cleaner, even rubbing alcohol but nothing seems to get the polish off.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Do I have to let the polish "cure" or is there something that will take it off so I can once again have a clean surface to use the U.C. on?

Putting a polish on first shouldnt be a problem. Sounds like you may have just removed some more dirt, so your pad isnt grabbing the paint as much as you were used to on the test spots?

    What are you applying with?

You can always try washing with Dawn, if you want to try getting it off some more..

Hi Murr1525 -- thanks for your quick response! I was using microfiber pads to apply the ultimate compound and polish.

I always like the Smooth Foam pads (or Hi-Tec Foam pads) a bit better. Harder to find in a store though.

I have two Meguire's soft foam applicator pads that I was holding onto for the Gold Class wax application. I'll give it a shot, maybe it will have more "grab".

Can always be washed and used for anything in the future... Not like once and you are stuck.

Meguiar's MF pads? They have a specific compound designed to work with them. Why not use D300?

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I was thinking he meant hand applied with an Even Coat type applicator.

Actually these were just a 6 pack of microfiber pads that I got at O'Reilly's. Almost impossible to find the Meguire's foam pads around here but I did get two in the Meguire's paint restoration kit and plan on buying some more through Meguire's online.

So, I went out to work on the car tonight and it was cool outside, so was the hood. The compound went on and off flawlessly so I believe the problem very well could have been that the hood was simply too hot to work on when I tried to do it before on a cloudy day. Didn't get a chance to finish but worked long enough to realize how huge a difference it was between Saturday and today.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, hopefully the problem won't come up again! I'll try to post some pictures because *dang!* my hood looks good compared to before!
