  • What to use??

I'm hoping for some good advice!
My father-in-law has an 01 Gr Cherokee in dark blue. I told him I'd detail it. It is BAD. It has tons of scratches, nothing deep but all are very noticeable. I am using a rotary buffer but I need advice on what compound and pads I need to get this thing looking great again.

I always brag about Meguiar's products so I don't want to do an injustice. Also a good thing to top it off with. I have #7 polish, I use NXT 2.0 on my cars but didn't know if I should use something from the pro line because he will never wax it so I need what will last the longest.

    Thanks!
    Jeff

    Hey Jeff,

Are you experienced at all with a rotary buffer? The reason I ask is that you are asking what types of compounds and pads you should use, and most rotary users are experienced enough to know what to use.

If you do not have experience with a rotary, there is a chance that you can burn through your father in law's paint and potentially make his car look worse than it already does.

Lastly, are you positive that it is a rotary and not a DA or a wax spreader? Can you provide a make and model?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

I know enough to be dangerous. I'm not a pro with it, I've done about 10 cars with it. It is a rotary buffer. It's an old one I got from my dad. When I did the other vehicles I just used ultimate compound but I thought the pro line would be better to use.

Ultimate compound followed up with Ultimate Polish and then wax should do a great job for you. As far as using a rotary, I for one would not use it. I have two collecting dust in my garage. What I am afraid is that you might burn through paint or put in swirls that won't look good. Just my 2 cents.

Ultimate Compound is not intended for use by rotary. I would not suggest using it with a rotary.

I actually just brought this up at the last Saturday Open Class, and Mike explained that even though the pro line is designed for use by rotary and the consumer line is for DA/hand only, whey will both work with any application method.
