    Hi guys,

I am in the process of painting my car, due to finish the paintwork this friday!!

I plan on leaving the car to sit for a few weeks to let the solvents dry properly before wet sanding the car.

It has been painted in Dupont acrylic, 4 coats of orange, 5 of clear.

I have had a lot of success with buffing 2K cars over the year, but have never worked with acrylic.....

I have a Makita RB and a full range of foam pads.

Post wet sanding to remove the peel and get the flat look, what would you recommend to polish to a mirror finish, don't care if its a 1,2,3 or 4 step buffing process, just want a great result!!

Do I need to go to a wool pad for the sanding marks, or will a coarse foam do?

What Meguiars products would you suggest for the cutting process?

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Sounds like a fun project!

Your compounding step to remove sanding marks will be made easier if your sanding marks are very uniform and you finish down to 2000 grit or even finer. Obviously the coarser the grit, the deeper the sanding marks, the more buffing you need to do.

Whether you go foam cutting pad or wool pad is really up to you - there are arguments for both and preferences for both. Wool should cut faster but potentially leave more swirls (holograms) while foam will create more heat, and in less time. But if you use a high quality wool pad like our W5000 double sided wool in conjunction with M105 Ultra Cut Compound you should minimize swirling to the point that M205 on either a foam polishing or finishing pad is all you need to finish out with a brilliant, high gloss surface.

But how you use the W5000/M105 is critical:
    • Start out at about 1400 rpm and move up from there as needed. You may find 1800 rpm to be the sweet spot, depending on the paint, but we don't recommend exceeding 2000 rpm (and really, you shouldn't have to)
    • Keep the pad as flat on the paint as possible to minimize swirls
    • Move the pad slowly over the paint to further minimize swirls (don't go so slow as to generate high heat levels though)
    • Take your time - if you rush this step you inflict a lot of marring that you'll spend more time trying to remove later on. Net result is usually time lost, not gained.

Does anyone know if M205 and M105 is available in Australia? I noticed it is not on the AUS Meguiars web site, only the M80 / M85 series.

      Cheers,
