  • Question about bumper that has been repainted twice in 4 months.

I have a CPO JB e90 that had paint peeling from the front bumper in January 2011. It was repainted late January at no cost by the body shop with which the dealer contracts.

After about a month I noticed the paint was nearly all orange peel. It looked awful. I called them up and they agreed to redo it again at no cost. I picked up the car last Friday after they had it for 9 days. It looked fine.

I checked the bumper today and it's chipping more than I think is normal. In that time I have put roughly 200 miles on the car.
Pictures below of the chipping that has occurred in 6 days and are driver side only. I haven't washed the bumper in those 6 days.

    Is this normal?

What is my next move here? They have tried it twice, and from what I can tell can't seem to get it correct. The first time I contacted them I went straight to the dealer manager, which seemed to stir up quite the frenzy. The body shop had been receiving several repaints per week on cars they had done in the past. It sounded like their contract with the dealer was in jeopardy. They were more than pleasant, but this is starting to get ridiculous.

    Hey crewkip-

First of all, welcome to MOL!

I unfortunately had to edit out the hyperlink because we have a forum-wide rule that asks all new members to reach 30 posts before posting any type of outside hyperlink. Nothing personal, just the rules in order to help keep things spam and inappropriate-link free.

I also noticed the images on the 390 site were quite large, any chance you could re-size them to 800x600 and add them to this post in a reply?

Here is a How-to for resizing, and here is how to upload into MOL.

    Thanks!

Mark, Thanks for helping me out.

Here we go. Some pics. Also pic of some overspray I discovered.

Will the chipping become less frequent the more time the paint has to cure? Or was this repaint doomed from the beginning?

Hard to say if it is peeling, or if you got hit by a lot of something. But if they have a history....

To fix yourself, you'd want to sand the spots a little to get any loose edges, then a little touch up paint. Sanding the edges might tell you if it is going to keep lifting. Esp that one chip looks like it is running, which is unusual.

Looks like budget work to me...and that sure is a lot of chipping (and large chips) in such a short period of time. Where the grille meets the paint looks really poorly done as well... looks rushed.

The problem is, shops that paint like that once will more likely than not do it the same way the second, third and fourth time they try as well. It looks as if they aren't using a proper adhesion promoter, and possibly not using the additive to make the paint stretch since it is on a plastic piece.

Hard to say just from the pics, though.

          Maybe try the BBB?

First off what type of primer and paint is being used?

Secondly, How is the bumper being sanded?

Third, is the bumper being sprayed in a booth? If not, where and how is the paint drying?

If this is a dealer contracted shop, I would go back to the dealership and show them theses pictures. This is a very basic piece to spray and get right. Something is VERY wrong with their work. (or work ethic)

            Keep us updated!

Edit : one last thing, how much flex are you giving the piece during install?

Can't answer any of those questions. Sorry.

I understand that paint may be 'soft' and not fully cured but it seems like this is excessive chipping for 6 days. I just want to confirm that is the consensus of this forum as well.

I am not sure I follow your last question. Flex? Honestly it looks like the bumper was not removed during the paint procedure. The underbody panel on the car had overspray which makes me believe the bumper was on the car for the respray.

                Gotcha,

By chance do you drive your vehicle on a dirt road or a rock drive way daily?

If not,im guessing these guys just hit the bumper with a scotch bright pad and re shot to save time/labor/materials. Something is going on under the paint thats causing this.

When you take the car back, ask them about the prep work. Also demand if they are going to do a crappy masking job since they are not removing the bumper, that you want the over spray removed before you pick the car up.

Again, a bumper is very basic. (you might want to tell them that too)

                  No dirt roads whatsoever.

I will give them a call tomorrow. Very frustrating that my car has been in their possession for nearly 2 weeks and they have yet to get this paint job correct.
