  • ....i think i just died a little inside.

So - a guy i know from here locally and who is an acquaintance of sorts knows ive been detailing for a while and he just out of nowhere jumped on the bandwagon blabbing about his "detailing" services through facebook. I understand he doesnt have a job and is looking for money....but this just makes me die a little inside. Heres some of his status updates i read and just shook my head about.

automotive detailing cheap rates and good work the cheapest detailing u will find in town. 50 for cars 75 full sized trucks and 100 for suvs and vans detail includes wash wax clean windows vacume and shampoo carpet clean and protect dash and all plastic inside car call for appointment 6415302288

doing automotive detailing call or text me for appointment you won't find a cheaper detailer in town 6415302288

doing detail work 50 for cars 75 for trucks and 100 for suvs and vans detail includes wash wax and interior cleaned call me at 641-530-2288 to set a time

Now - again, this is the same guy who drove my buddies truck into a tree at 50 MPH drunk while trying to "drift", this was SHORTLY after his 1 OWI offence, and this made his 2nd. Anyway - i just dont feel this guy really has ANY idea what hes doing - right down to dropping MF pads on the floor of the parts store he bought wax from, picking them up and putting them back on the table to purchase......and from 10 ft away i saw sand and dirt in the MF.....

I dont really want to cut his work, but i DO feel i need to do something so i can fix all the stuff he does to the vehicles. Not sure this guy has ever detailed a day in his life before haha. If he calls me for advice i WILL give him my advice, as IF this is something hes going to do i DO want him to do it right, however, im NOT going to give away all my secrets to my perfection as im the ONLY detailer in town who does paint correction...

Just thought id throw this up there for you guys to see and comment back on what youd do in this situation. this post was NOT meant to demean my friend AT ALL or say he ***** at life or anything, this post was simply explaining what he is doing and how he got here haha.

I really would'nt worry too much about it. Guys like this won't last long if they can't do a decent job. Give him time and he will hang himself if he is as bad as you say. I see lots of "detailers" pop up around where I live and the all fade away pretty quick.

There's a difference in cost and value. I'm a mortgage broker. I get beat up all the time by "the other cheaper lender". I don't work for free and if I do you bet I will be home detailing my car instead. I know the value I deliver at a competitive cost. Stick to your cost and know the value you deliver. Your people will be loyal to you and I bet you will end up picking up his customers once they see they job they get from your buddy.

Re: ....i think i just died a little inside.

Depending in what kind of mood I am in I will always tell a potential client to take it to the "other place", let them do the best detail they can and then bring it to me and I will top it times ten for free.

Now obviously you cannot do this for everyone but I have done this in a few cases and was able to spread the word and succesfully gain a few clients.

There are a lot of people out there that will cringe when they see someone bragging how cheap they are.

Also keep in mind that not a lot of people are interested and just do not care about paint correction. So you have to just be able to be better at overall cleansiness.

Unfortunately, "detailing" means different things to different people. I had a coworker who "details" on the weekends for several clients. In his mind and theirs, detailing means a wash/wax and interior clean. He is happy and so are they. However, I have shown them my work as well as some "click and brags" on this website and several other detailing based websites of some professional detailers that I respect. He has seen the light and realizes that he is cleaning the cars but not correcting the cars. Still he is happy and so are his customers. So to each their own....

              Zach,

You seem to be emotionally invested in your friend and you must be pretty twisted up inside over his choice to enter into your field of endeavor. He's seen how easy you make it look to detail cars (which we all here know it's not easy) and he's chosen to mimic your success. As others have stated, he will fail. Ignore him.

This sentence bothers me a bit, "but i DO feel i need to do something so i can fix all the stuff he does to the vehicles". Zach, thread lightly and continue to offer your superior services, move forward without getting into a war of words. Do your job, do it well and it will all work out.

i dont plan on getting into a "war of words" at all with him, and as i said, if he comes to me for advice, i will give it to him, however, i dont feel he really "understands" what hes doing when he does it besides the obvious, im making it shiny.

                  [QUOTE=CumminsCrazed;464649 im making it shiny.[/QUOTE]
All some people want is "shiny" and a clean interior. Maybe he is filling a niche for people want a clean shinny car and don't need a swirl free show piece. 90% of the people out there would not know a swirl if it smacked them. People who do and want a professional job will come to you, people who just want a clean shiney car, will go to him. Many people don't have 2 or 3 hundred dollars to pay a proferssional but could cough up 50 bucks for a wax and vacuum. It is business you would not have had anyway. It is called the free market.

Be that as it may, we are not comfortable with posting links to his Facebook page here on MOL, especially in light of the somewhat negative picture you've painted of your friend. We're fine with a discussion of how to handle a local detailer advertising drastically reduced prices relative to your own pricing structure, but the personal aspect of the situation needs to be tempered - which we've done.

Yep, you had his full name and links to his Facebook page. Gotta watch how some of those things get handled by forum software sometimes, or what is collected when you copy and paste! No worries, we took that info down.
