    Using Wheel Cleaner on Tires

    So I did a little bit of searching on here to find out if it is OK to use wheel cleaner on my tires, but I haven't found a complete answer yet. I understand that something like APC, or APC+ is what is generally recommended, but I don't have either. I do have a bottle of All Wheel Cleaner, and I used it on my tires. It seemed really efficient to use the same product on the wheels and the tires. The tires and the wheels are both exposed to exactly the same contaminants.

    My question is -- can I keep using the wheel cleaner on my tires? It seems to work well, and it is quick to spray the tire and the wheel at the same time.

    What does everybody think?

    It certainly won't damage your tires if that's what you're worried about. The question is how long it'll last versus an actual water- or solvent-based tire shine. And I'm guessing not as well.

    I don't think it hurts to pick up a bottle of tire shine spray. The stuff can be found really cheap at walmart for $5 and 1 bottle seems to last forever. I also just clean my rims and tires with leftover soap/water after the car wash. Then just spray on the tire shine. Just make sure to work it in really good with a sponge or tire shine applicator to avoid sling.

      He's asking about using a wheel cleaner to clean the tires too, not to dress them?

          I clean my tyres with the rim cleaner that I have!

          But then, it totally depends on what type of rim cleaner are you using!

          I wont use an acid based cleaner unless absolutely necessary!

          I'd use something alkaline or neutral pH stuff!

          Just avoid any acidic cleaners!

            I am following up the cleaning of the tires with the Endurance gel -- works great btw. Is the Hot Rims all wheel cleaner too strong to use on the tires? I haven't seen the Gold Class all wheel cleaner in any of the local stores around here.

            I know I have to clean the tires so that the dressing will bond, and last longer. I just wanted to make sure that the wheel cleaner wasn't too strong for rubber. I don't see and indications on the bottle to keep it off the rubber.

              i use surf city garage beyond steel wheel and tire cleaner, they best wheel and tire cleaner i have ever used,its safe to use on all wheels and all tires as many times as you want.

                I don't see any problems about using All Wheel Cleaner on your tires, though perhaps the Meguiar's experts have other thoughts on it. I know that many folks have had good luck with Eagle One's A2Z™ All Wheel & Tire Cleaner. Why wouldn't Meguiar's All Wheel Cleaner work equally well on tires?

                  An alkaline or acidic wheel surface cleaner may be too harsh to clean the 'rubber' (actually highly cross-linked polymers)

                  Although 3M market a combined tyre / wheel surface cleaner

                    EO All Wheel and Tire Cleaner is acidic, IIRC (not alkaline), but it works very well and I've never had a problem with it damaging the rubber in the years that I've been using it?
