  • New black car.. Need detailing advice.

Hello all. I have owned many cars but none were black. To be honest I'm kinda intimidated by the color and potential damage to the paint. The car is new and it is a "garage queen" never intended on driving in trying weather. I want to detail it tomorrow and need to know the best steps for this process. This would include waxing, etc.. Possibly clay barring. My question is this....What's the best way to start this car off right? Thanks to you for your help... My apologies if this has been covered many times before, but searching the forum for my specific needs is not helping me entirely.

Well, if the surface is good so far, you can keep it simple then.

    1. Wash - 2 buckets, Gold Class Soap, good mitts, towels, etc
    2. Clay - Smooth Surface clay kit
    3. ColorX
    4. Wax - Ultimate Wax
    5. Maintain - Ultimate Quick Wax for after future washes.

And of course good applicators like the Hi-Tec foam applicators, and Supreme Shine towels to remove products.

Black paint shows everything. Use good quality towels, as Mat pointed, Water Magnet for drying your vehicle, Supreme Shine for product application/ wipe off and Ultimate Wipe for final removal.

As for maintenance use two or more towels while using quick detailers: one for spreading and one for drying, switch to fresh/ clean towels doing lower panels as they tend to be dirtier. Car duster before quick detailing may help as well to remove lose stuff which can cause swirls/ scratches.

Hi, Murr's list is great and will greatly improve the finish on a new black car. I would suggest you spend just a little time reviewing some of the information available on the site.

Read this old post for some basic information and then watch all of the Meguiar's videos, either here or on YouTube. Especially anything to do with washing the car. A good mitt and a good lubricating soap/shampoo are very important. Then watch one on claying the car. Those two act may, if done wrong, mar a finish. Using ColorX and Ultimate Wax are less likely to mar a finish if you use the appropriate applicator.

Good luck and enjoy black, it's full of wonder....

If you went back to early 2006 posts on this forum, you would find one from me that looks almost identical to yours...I had gotten my first black car and I was scared to death that I wouldn't be able to make it look the way I wanted it to...5 years later, and three black cars since, I'm here to tell you that EVERYTHING you need in terms of information and guidance on keeping your car looking show room clean is right here. Above all else, get good quality cleaning products from wash mitts to drying towels to microfibre towels...DO NOT skimp on less expensive products. As previously mentioned, black shows everything....BUT, when done right, black cars look awesome. You will get more compliments on your black ride than anyother car you've owned...Can't wait to see pics of your car when you've done it the Meguiars way ...good luck !!!
