  • Removing Wetsanding Residue?

    Hello everyone.

Little by little I have been building up my arsenal with products and know how by reading helpful threads and replies by many of you. With that being said, my car is an absolute mess at the moment and currently muli-colored since I have some parts in the body shop that are being re-painted or painted. My intention is that once I have those parts back and come mid April, maybe late, I will be giving my car a complete overhaul which will consist of pulling the fenders, hood, bumpers, etc. to thoroughly clean them and then properly aligning the body.

With that being said, one of the things I really want to do, which has also been annoying me, is clean up the residue left behind from when my car was wetsanded. After my vehicle was painted last April, the body shop wetsanded the body resulting in the residue left behind.

Does anyone have experience removing the residue left behind & if so, how did you go about doing so: products, process? For those who have not, what would you suggest or go about doing so?

Thank you all in advance. Below are the pictures of the residue on my vehicle.

Along the inside of the fender that is bent into the body.

The residue you're seeing is a mix of sanded paint, dried water, and possibly a lubricant (car wash or similar). I have wetsanded a lot of cars, and the residue has always just washed off with a simple car shampoo, same mix as if you were washing your car.

That should be sufficient. Having said that, I have never left the residue on for such a long time.

I agree, it should just wash right off with ease. Just a normal car wash or APC in the jambs should do the trick.

In a feeble attempt, I have attempted to wash it off in the past. I honestly can not remember if I just blasted it with water or if I used ONR. Either way, neither was the best way to actually remove it. This time around, I won't be so lazy about it. Like you mentioned though, I am concerned about the amount of time it's been like that, which is almost a year.

I wonder if APC D103 will be to harsh, but I'm almost certain it will do the job if it's diluted properly.

No problem using APC ... clean the area and rinse
