  • Decal removal

I just purchased a 2011 Harley Davidson F150. For those who don't know...they have some hideous decals on them...probably 10 square feet all together on the sides and hood. For starters...I know to use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat up and removed the deals. However...being a new truck I don't want to induce any scratches in the metallic black paint.

    1) what is a safe product to remove any excess adhesive?
    2) any tips or pointers?

    Thanks,
    Shaun

A few swirls will probably happen, but easily removed.

And if you get them off while new, you wont have the paint fading to worry about at least.

A hair dryer or heat gun will work very well. If it leaves any sticky residue behind you can clean that up with a variety of different cleaners like Goo-gone or a wax and tar remover.

Are goo-gone or regular ole wax and tar remover harsh on the paint? Does it matter if I use a terry cloth or m/f or does it even matter?

When I got my 06 Toyota Tundra, I removed all my decal's. Just used a heat gun (only a few seconds, if you do it to long it will mess up the paint), used a 30 pound fishing line (6 inches long) and some WD-40 to take off the any left behind excess adhesive. I used a crappy terry cloth that I got from wal-mart.

After you finish removing the decals. Make sure to wash, polish and wax the truck. Trust me it will be worth the time.

Goo Gone or Bug and Tar would be safe. Being as gentle as possible will leave less fixing work after. (terry being fairly aggressive)

Would a clay bar be able to remove it?
