  • What Meguiars product to buy?

    Hi,

I am new to this forum. Folks at the Mini Cooper Forum recommended Meguiar's products for the car.

I am not "into" cars and I don't plan to spend much time on doing the necessary things to make it a "show car".

I bought a brand new 2009 Mini Cooper S in mellow yellow. I live near the beach. I garage my car when I am not driving it daily. I have never waxed it nor go has the car gone through the automatic car wash.

Would someone tell me all the products I need to buy to maintain my car in excellent shape? This would also include the towel and sponges. There are so many products and I am so confused.

    Thanks very much.

    wash: Meguiar's Gold Class Wash
Clean: Meguiar's Clay Kit ( clean paint surface for next step correction )
Paint: Meguiar's Ultimate Compound ( for paint correction )
    Meguiar's Scratch-X ( for minor paint correction )
    Polish: Ultimate Polish
Wax: Meguiar's Gold Class Wax, NXT 2.0, or the newest Ultimate Wax

Those are what I would suggest my friends to have, and you should be able to pick them up at your local walmart store for pretty low pricing.

If not going to be 'into' car care, better off with just a cleaner/wax and maybe a wax to top it with.

        1. Wash - Ultimate Was n'Wax
        2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit once or twice a year
        3. ColorX
        4. Wax - Ultimate Wax

If going to be doing the washing yourself, you'll want 2 buckets. Can use the Meguiars Wash mitt, Water Magnet towels to dy, Supreme Shine towels to remove products. And a few of the foam applicator pads.

I'l look at Autodetailingsolutions.com if going to be making one big order.

Which kind of ultimate wax? there is ultimate quik wax, liquid wax, paste wax.

which is the easiest with the best look?

After I finish all the steps outlined, do I just need to wash my car or complete steps again?

Also , do I need anything for my factory wheels?

When I put the wax on, do i just use one foam applicator for the whole car and one towel for polishing the whole car?

When I use the smooth clay kit, is it only one foam applicator and one towel for the whole car?

I like liquid... looks will be the same, just personal preference as to what is easiest.

You would wash your car with the Wash n'Wax regularly, and then would use the ColorX and U.Wax as often as wanted, usually 3-4 times a year minimum. And then the claying once or twice a year. Of course some folks here do more, so you'll see more mentioned.

If the wheels are failry clean, you could just use the soap left over in your wash bucket. If dirtier, then something like the Aluminum Wheel Cleaner or All Wheel Cleaner would be wanted.

You would want one applicator for the ColorX, and one for the U.Wax. If you dropped one however, you would want a new one, not rish dragging stones around. Then wash them after, let dry, and re-use (dont put in a sealed bag). One towel should remove each step, but again dont drop.

The clay kit is not an applicator, it is a piece of clay. And yes, your clay should last for a few details if the car is new, and pretty clean. And then one towel should be enough to remove the QD spray. However, I prefer to break the clay from two chunks into 4. If you drop it on the floor, throw it out. It will pick up stones, and drag them across the paint. I started out by working over a piece of cardboard, incase I dropped it.

The Ultimate Quick Wax is a spray wax to be used after washing.

Basically, you could look at washing with a soap like Gold Class, and then following up with the UQW spray. This would be two steps, but the UQW is pretty good.

Or you could use the U. Wash n Wax. That would be one step, still get a little wax back on there.

I have all 3 products, and basically use whichever I feel like. If I am rushed, I use the Wash'n and Wax. If i have time, I will do the 2 steps (and the UQW is very quick anyway).

Re: What Meguiars product to buy?

Just my inputs, but its subject to change.. Here's what i would use:

Towels- I prefer (or recommend) microfiber drying towels or microfiber chamois, not the synthetic rubber/leather-like chamois, since i've seen that it can cause additional swirls and remove some of the wax coating. I have quite a few, just make sure to keep it clean.

Dusters-I'm not sure if megs has these, but buy a good quality duster. If only a light layer of dust is on your paint, you can use these dusters. Use a continuous, slow but sweeping motion and ensure full coverage.. These work well in conjunction with instant detailers.

Clat Bar Kits- NEVER DROP THE CLAY BAR! you drop it, you throw it away.. It will pick up everything and anything on the ground. Clay bars do wonders to paint, new or old (even new paint has contaminants stuck on them). Your paint will be very smooth (although a bit grabby) after claying, your wax goes on easier, and will be just as easy to remove when it hazes. It gives your paint that certain softness, evenness, and slick feel. A lot slicker than a non-clayed surface.

Car shampoo- Ultimate wash and wax works well, it is a booster for you existing wax but in car wash form, so its basically hitting 2 birds with 1 stone. There are many kinds of car wash available at meguiars, all work well.

Wax-If price is not a factor, synthetic polymer wax is for you. These types of waxes or sealants complement your bright colored car better than carnauba based wax. Synthetics add brightness more than carnaubas. Both work well, and any of those 2 waxes will give your car that nice shine. Its a question of preference, but on yellow, go the synthetic route. NXT 2.0 will work, easy to apply and remove.. Ultimate Wax is even better, easier to remove, should give more shine than NXT 2.0. However, don't assume that NXT 2.0 is obselete or its a slouch vs. Ultimate wax. NXT 2.0 is a GREAT product. I do recommend the liquid vs. the paste

Ultimate quik detailer/Ultimate quik wax- Use UQD in between washing/waxing. If UQD becomes more difficult to remove(you will notice it as the wax protection slowly fades), then UQW should be applied. 2 very easy to use products!

WHen washing your car, start from the roof and work your way to the bottom of your car, rinse your car thoroughly. Take your time in drying your car.. I'd start with the glass (windshield, windows, etc) then end with the body panels. Again, i preffer to start on the roof then work my way down. I also use straight line motion in drying the car and use just enough pressure, sort of like guiding the drying towels. Take time in removing excess water on those tight crevices or panel gaps. I actually blow off (yep, thats right!) the excess on really tight gaps..

Even if its "just a car wash" procedure, you'll be very surprised how shiny your car will be.. Just imagine how it'll look after a coat of wax.. or 2 coats!

As you get therse results, I can almost guarantee that you will become car crazy... You will love your results, you will love the shine, and you will want to keep your car very shiny!!

Re: What Meguiars product to buy?

Not much I can add, from the other post above. I would also like to add, you can go by your Wal-Mart and pick up the kits they have.

                    For example:

Meguiars Brilliant Solutions New Car Kit
                    Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit
Meguiars Brilliant Solutions Paint Restoration Kit
Meguiars Brilliant Solutions Wheel Polishing Kit
Meguiars Headlight & Clear Plastic Restoration Kit

But like stated before, it's all what you like. Some waxes give a different result for each car, then others. But in the end, depending on how much time you wanna spend working on your car, will result in the outcome of it.

I love spending that extra time to wash, polish, wax and clay if I need too. Because when you have a car 4 to even 10+ years old and it looks like it just came off the car lot. Makes most people smile. But take the time and try new products, you might like something more then the last one or you might the old one more then all the new products who knows.

Also I use this site to check out the other products and find out what they are used for. Might help you decide on what you might need or even want to try, lol.

Meguiar's Products - From humble beginnings sprang the car care dynasty that is Meguiar's. Interestingly, the first Meguiar's wax was for furniture. Frank Meguiar, Jr., the founding father of the company, mixed the furniture polish one bottle at a ...
