  • Waxing of wheels question

My wife's 2 cars both have chrome wheels, mine, one has polished aluminum and the other is coated. I have never waxed any of the wheels but I have been reading on here that a lot of members do.

Is NXT good for all these wheels? I read one thread that someone used Mirror Glaze Pro Polymer Sealant. I am looking at something good for all the wheels so I just need one wax. I have NXT on hand but not M20.

    Thanks

I was under the impression that wax will melt off the rims due to the extreme temp.

It won't necessarily melt, per se, as the surface temp of most wheels doesn't get crazy hot - usually. Consider that the paint on a black car sitting in the summer sun can reach 185F and you know what we mean.

You're better off using a synthetic product like NXT or Ultimate Wax rather than a carnauba product like Gold Class or M26 as they will stand up to the heat better. But really, in the long run, if your brake pads shed dust like a chimney sweep don't expect a coat of wax to prevent that from building up and potentially baking into the wheel surface. And don't expect the wax to survive the application of a wheel cleaner like Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner, Wheel Brightener, or Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner. Your wheels are a pretty harsh environment for any wax, and not just because of the heat from the brakes.

IMO, waxing wheels regularly is worth the time and effort, as I really hate strong wheel cleaners. You wouldn't spray any wheel cleaner on your fender, so why subject a wheel's clearcoat to the same torture? I happen to prefer Collinite, but I wouldn't hesitate to use any good Meguiar's sealant. Keeping a wax coating on a wheel just makes them so much easier to clean, whether they're chrome, aluminum or coated. With periodic waxing, either GC wash or ONR with a mitt or sponge keeps them clean just fine.
