  • Now Ive done it.

I got my wifes car because she wanted a new one. Had to trade my truck in for her new car. I got her 2008 PT Cruiser. Black metallic pearl coat. It looked terrible so I washed it and low and behold it looked like a brand new car, literally. The only problem was it had several very minor scratches on it. Last weekend I found this site and after some reading decided to get some UC and rub out the scratches. It worked very well. This car really does have a beautiful paint job. Heres my problem, the car has some very minor swirling and where I rubbed out the scratches looks amazingly beautiful. It really brought out the Metallic in the paint job. No body can see the difference but me. I will probably do the entire car lightly with the UC unless someone says its not a good idea. I have always used GC wax and have almost a full bottle so thats what I'm sticking with at least until its gone. Should I use a polish before I wax? Do I need to clay it if I'm going to UC the whole car?
For those that are wondering the wife is driving around in a brand new 2010 Challenger. Nobody ever said life was fair!

I would clay it. Put on a coat of #7 Show Car Glaze as my polish, then the GC wax. UC only if you need it to remove additional scratches. I don't think it will hurt anything to go over the car with the UC it's just work you may not need to do. I use this on my black Expedition and it works great.

Have you tried swirl x? Its less abrasive then the UC.

Its always a good idea to clay, it lifts contaminates off the paint that compounds cant lift off.

          You got the shaft!!
But yes, it's a very good idea to clay the car before any other step. You need to start out with a good clean surface if you want to get the best results. UC or swirlX would be a good second step, and follow that up with your favorite wax, GC is great, especially if you already have it.
I hope you get to drive the Challenger sometimes!

UC mildly is not a problem. Wouldnt want to use it all the time, but nothing wrong with claying, and UCing eveerything mildly, then looking for Ultimate Polish or SwirlX in the future for milder cleanings.

I went over my entire PT with Ultimate Compound using a DA and it worked great to remove most all the swirls and fine scratches. After that I used NXT 2.0 and it looks good. Mine is an '01 Patriot Blue... I have some Ultimate Polish coming and can't wait to try that out on my next detail.
