  • Previous owner spray painted door, how to remove?

I have single stage paint. The previous owner had spray painted the door of my car red, to match the rest of the paint. It seems to have been there for awhile. What can I do to remove it? I am planning on tackling it with Aggressive Clay, would that be the right method? I have also heard methods of using lacquer or acetone, but I'm afraid to try them.

    What color is underneath?

Are we dealing with over spray or a total repaint with a shaker can?

It is red underneath. I think it is a repaint with a shaker can. I don't think it was accidental. It's not even the whole door, just a portion of it, I think underneath is oxidation, which was why he spray painted it.

last question(s), what are you trying to accomplish?

Will you be working by hand or machine?

Pics might be helpfull, but i don't think clay is going to be what you want.

There was probably a rust spot or something, and spray painted over it. You would want to sand everything away and start from scratch to do it right.

I plan on removing the spray paint and then do Ultimate Compound on the paint underneath with a DA. I want to give it a gloss, smooth surface, then remove swirls.

If I was a betting man, (which im not) I would say there is an 80% chance there's bondo under the spray paint.

Do you have any magnets around the house? If you do does it stick to the spray painted area? If it does, stay clear it will need a full sand and repaint.

If thats is the case and you dont have the money to get the door fixed properly, you can see what #7 can do for the area. Its a pure polish and oils might make the spot less noticeable. Its the LEAST abrasive approach, I would hate for that door to look worse then it already is.
