  • Detailing single stage paint?

Any different process/products for single stage vs bc/cc? Any tips?

  • #2
    Hey,

What type of buffer will you be using; rotary or PC?

The reason I ask is that Meguiar's makes a traditional line of paint cleaners that were originally designed for single stage paint. However, these cleaners are for rotary use only. For example:

    #1 Medium-Cut Cleaner

    [b]Medium-Cut Cleaner

    #2 Fine-Cut Cleaner

    #2 Fine-Cut Cleaner

    #4 Heavy Cut Cleaner

    #4 Heavy Cut Cleaner

But with that said, Meguiar's Body Shop Series (80's) though designed for BC/CC, also work well for SS paint.

So, it really depends on the paint's condition, and the buffer you are using etc...

If you can provide a little more information and/or pictures that would greatly help in choosing the correct products.

I've been happy using the 80 series on my toyota. I usually use #83 if needed, followed by #80. I then use either #16 or NXT. There are a number of the older polishes in the line-up that are designed specifically for SS paint such as #2, 4, and 5. I have found that the 80's series works just fine though.

I used a terry towel and ColorX to remove the oxidation then topped with NXT.

I wasn't going after the swirls just the oxidation.

        Good luck!

          electricgreen,
I have not worked on SS paint, but have had success with the 80 series products. I would not hesitate to try the 80 series on SS because the 80 series are more modern liquid abrasives, and I do not have #1,#2,#4 further I do not plan to purchase these product either.

As Tim said more information is needed. Do you have any pictures?

          Tim,
I thought #2 was discontinued at the begining of the year.

            Hey Eric,

Yes, Meguiar's #2 Fine Cut Cleaner was discontinued. However, some PBE stores may still have it in stock. I really liked this product, especially on single stage paint!

But the 80 series also works great with SS. Plus, you can use a PC with all but the 2 most aggressive (#85 Diamond Cut 2.0 and #84 Compound Power Cleaner are rotary only).

One trick I like to use on oxidized SS or fiberglass is to apply and remove a coat of #7 Show Car Glaze. This will help prevent buffer hop and allow you to work the other products properly.

By hand for SS paint is good IMO. Reason being I didn't care for getting my PC pads stained with pigment. That's why I used a terry towel, I just trashed it when I was done.

I guess if we could see clear coat then my pads would be stained with clear coat.?.

For my ss 1991 Toyota MR2 I used #80, #7 and NXT (x2). #7 was specifically designed for ss paint. This is a sweet combo, IMO.
