Wax question

Hey all,

I been using the Gold Class Liquid Wax (Carnauba Plus), but the one down thing I have is with it, it comes off when it rains. We usually don't get much rain in San Diego. But we are getting it a lot now.

Is their any one, I can use that wont wash of the next day when it rains? Also I prefer to use liquid wax if possible. I detail a truck and two other cars, so I want something that is a little faster and easier then paste wax.

You can try either NXT 2.0 or the new Ultimate wax. Both will last longer than the GCCP.

If you prepare paint surface your wax will last much longer. You're gonna create a stronger bonding between paint and wax.

Use a clay bar to remove above surface bonded contaminants and paint cleaner/ cleaner polish or cleaner wax for below surface defects.

As Mike mentioned, synthetic waxes offer longer protection.

Prep work is key, no matter how nice or expensive your wax is it will never look its best or last as long as it should if the foundation isnt right.

Ultimate Wax is your best bet but like others have said, its all about the prep and how clean the surface is before application of a LSP

None of Meguiar's waxes will come off in a couple of rains. That includes Gold Glass and even the "burgandy bottle" cleaner/wax. I suggest and application of NXT 2.0 or Ultimate Wax every 6-8 weeks and then if you are a bit on the obsessive side, an application of Ulitimate Quick Wax after every wash.

By the way, even though the surface of your car doesn't "bead", the wax is still protecting the finish. "Beading" is much overrated.

Thanks for all the reply's guys. I did my Toyota Celica today. I wash, clayed and used Ultimate Compound and used the sample bottle of the Ultimate Quick Wax today. I love the UQC, just cuss it speeds up the process of detailing.

What is a good paint cleaner? I know a dumb question, I just don't got a lot of time to be looking at all the Meg. product's to figure out that question. To much homework and work, lol.

But back to the main question. I clayed my truck and used UC on it before waxing, then wax it with GCCP. The following day it rain for like 3 days straight and I did the wax check thing (running your fingers over the car). Well it sounded like I had no wax on it after the rain. So should I just wash it again and wax it one more time?

I just don't want have to keep washing and waxing my truck each time it rains here. I wash it once a month and every couple months do a claying to it.

Waxes resist water. They don't wash off easily. Is it possible that you didn't cover your car evenly or used too little product?

Ultimate Compound is an aggressive paint cleaner. For serious corrections (deep swirls, scratches, oxidized paint, water spots) it's a good choice.

For smaller problems one of the cleaner polishes will be enough, like SwirlX or Ultimate Polish.

I might not have put a enough on. When I get my truck back (at the dealer ship) I will give it a good wash and use a little bit more wax. Thanks for the fast reply.

I'm curious to know what this wax check thing is and where you heard about it?

The correct test for the presence of wax is the squeak test on a dry, perfectly clean surface. Do a search here for "squeak test".

I have a feeling your wax is still there, even though you think it's not. Meguiars waxes won't wash off after only one rain storm.

Sorry about this late reply, I been busy with life's bs, lol. I saw it on another site, they said just to run your fingers a cross the car area and if it makes a squeak sound then the wax is gone, if it doesn't then it still on the car. But I read that information before I started using meg's products. So I always thought I should wax it every time it rain or I washed the car. From my understanding and correct me if I am wrong on this. Your telling me I might not need to re wax if it rains? What about washing the car, I don't use the car wash + wax stuff, just the car wash soap by meg's.

Also one more question about waxing. If your claying the car and you use a car wash soap with wax, wouldn't you be removing the wax when you clay the car? I just want to make sure so I don't use the car wash + wax when I'm about to clay my whole truck, lol.

That test for the presence of wax which you heard elsewhere may work for other manufacturer's waxes (though I doubt it) but you'll find the correct method for Meguiars waxes here. I strongly suggest you do a search for "squeak test".

No way should you need to wax every time you wash the car or it rains! I mean, you can if you want (it wont hurt anything) but you shouldn't need to.

All of Megs car washes (even the ones with no "wax" in them) will not strip wax, so you're safe there too.

You are correct in saying that claying will remove your wax, so it is unecessary to use a wash'n'wax before claying - a normal Mags car wash will do.

Digital, I think you may be overthinking about this. Gold Class may not be the most durable wax out there, but it sure ain't "washing" off after a day or two of rain. The best thing for you to do is to simply adopt a regular regimen of washing and waxing your car. Get in the habit, in other words, of waxing your car every four to eight weeks. In between waxing, you can, if you desire, maintain and boost your protection by applying Ultimate Quik Wax.
