  • Paint Tape

Here in about a week I'll be getting a PC 7336. Since it's winter, my car is just sitting in the garage. I want to detail it, but also take my time. If I tape the edges of the car off, is there a certain amount of time I have before I need to take it off? I'm thinking that if I take my time it'll take around a week or two with tape on it.

Most of the blue painter's tape is 7-day release, meaning it will hold and release easily for seven days. After this you may have a slight residue left behind. I have left the tape on for longer and had no problem removing. I normally just tape off trim, rubber seals, roof racks (where the meet the paint), roof rails, plastic unpainted door handles and windshield washer nozzles. I do not worry about seams, as I take extra time to clean residue from edges and seams. Another thing to tape off or to complete by hand is louver or other places were paint may be thin.

I pulled this of 3M's web site, they say up to 14 days for their medium adhesion tape...

      Scotch® Blue Painter’s Tape
Tip Sheet for Choosing the Right Tape

Determine the type of surface that will be masked
The type of surface being masked is the most important factor when selecting tape. Different types of surfaces require different types of Scotch® Blue Painter’s tape. There are tapes for the following surfaces: painted surface and glass, trim and woodwork, freshly painted surfaces as found in faux and decorative techniques.

      Determine adhesion level needed
The adhesion level of tape you needed is based on the type of surface that is being painted. For example, delicate surfaces such as wallpaper and freshly painted surfaces require tapes with low adhesion and rough surfaces such as carpets or concrete require more aggressive tapes with higher adhesion.

      Clean removal time
When painting a room the length of time to complete the project must be considered. Tape adhesion to a surface will build (bond) over a short period of time (24 hours) and continue to build thereafter. The longer the tape is left on the surface, the more problems can occur when removal time arrives. Scotch® Blue Painter’s Tape offers several options for maximum flexibility in terms of the project duration. For example, Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape for surfaces and glass, number 2090 has medium adhesion, which is ideal for painting on walls, trim, woodwork, glass and metal and cleanly removes up to 14 days later. Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape faux and decorative painting number 2080 is low-medium adhesion and ideal for delicate surfaces, striping, glass, freshly painted surfaces (at least one day old) and vinyl coated paper wall coverings and removes cleanly up to 60 days later.
