  • Looking to get a DA Polisher...

    Hi All,

Looking to go down the path of using a machine to do my work rather then my hands as it seems my hands don't have the grunt to remove the fine scratches on my car etc.

I've seen this one pop up in a few threads here (Kestrel DAS-6) but alas thats over $200 and I wish to avoid paying that much if i can help it.

I've had a brief look and stumbled over these 2 which I could pick up at a local hardware/retailer

1500W 180mm OZITO SPG-160VK Sander/Polisher Kit, features: # Variable speed dial controls speed of disc and provides longer paper life & superior finish when polishing
    # Trigger switch controls power and is convenient to use, # No load speed: 1,000 – 3,000/min
    # Pad size: 180mm (7”)
    # Full armature bearings: Yes
    # Paper type: Hook & loop

    Or...

    Rockwell Shop Series Car Polisher - RS4900, 1200W, 180mm, # Variable speed
    # Spindle lock
    # Lock off switch
    # Horizontal D handle
    # Serviceable brushes

I have no idea which is the better to use or if these are any good.

    Thanks in advance
    James.

    Hi James,

Both machines are rotary buffers. They are direct-driven and produce high speed circular motion. It means they remove paint fast while also generating intense heat. Great machines when you deal with serious paint problems but require some learning time to improve proper/ safe technique.

To get familiar with machine polishing and get detailing jobs done faster I would recommend a dual action (random orbital) polisher. Kestrel DAS-6 is one of them. They are absolutely safe on your paint but capable of doing a correcting work.

You can start polishing your car with DA machine practically in no time and still get absolutely great results/ total defect removal.

Your best bet is getting a D/A as its the safest way to remove light to medium defects in the paint. Since it sounds like you are just getting started I think a rotory would be a bad idea for you due to the aggresiveness of the machine.

Re: Looking to get a DA Polisher...

I would suggest investing in a DA like Meguiars G110v2, Porter Cable 7424XP or the Griots Garage DA. Any of these will remove swirls and scratches and deliver superb results.

As for the price point, I believe autodetailingsolutions.net is still running a sale on polisher/pad combos which are very nice. I ordered the G110v2 and 6 SoftBuff 2.0 pads for $190 which is an awesome deal.

The G110v2 or GG6 would be great choices. I would pass on the PCXP. IMO, it's not that big of an improvement over the older version and the G110v2 and GG6 have more to offer.

Must learn to post properly it seems, the above one i mentioned was a
Mint RO Polisher DAS6-Pro, 6 inch.

Also looking at a Concours 900 Polisher Edge 6" which I can pick up from a Australian site or order the Griot's Garage DA from amazon..

The Griot DA seems to be the less expensive one by far by more then $100 or so

The real plus is the lifetime warranty on the Griots machine for me

I heard some good words about Griot's 6" DA polisher. It's quite powerful and, as mentioned, it comes with a lifetime warranty.
