  • Can this be fixed? Interior problem...

My stupid radar detector cord has, over time, scuffed up the plastic waterfall peice on my interior.

I haven't tried anything to correct it yet because it does appear to have a very thin coat of silver paint.

If it is indeed painted then you can try Ultimate Compound on it and see if it helps. Otherwise, I'm not really sure if there is anything you can do.

Is that silver smooth or textured?

If there is any texture, UC could remove it, and make things look odd.

Is it actual scratches, or black rubbing off the cord?

I seriously douby it's buffing out. With the right amount of professional color tinting a body shop may be able to match the color to the adjacent trim, but it might just be cheaper to replace it. What year/car is this? I'll look up the price and let you know how much it is.

There are mobile interior repair companies that fix that kind of damage plus tears in leather. Ask your local car dealer for a referral. Dealers use them a lot.

It looks like scratches but it's not. I tried to get my fingernail to go in the grooves but it's perfectly smooth. And the silver is smooth plastic. No texture.

Before you repaint or replace it try some M205 or swirl X on a yellow foam pad starting out with light to medium pressure. Like Murr1525 mentioned maybe use some Ultimate Compound if the swirl X or M205 is not aggressive enough. Maybe start at the very bottom as a test spot and move up from there see how that works. Add pressure if you find it necessary. Whatever it is you try let us know how it turns out.

Well, the damage is there... it's your call, but your best bet would be to start with a safe product such as SwirlX, or the new Ultimate Polish, and VERY gently apply it with a foam applicator. Do a small test spot and see what happens.

Realize though that you could potentially make it worse by removing too much, or changing the texture or sheen, so proceed with caution.

Be careful, the color is thin on those trims at the marring looks pretty deep. Lot monkeys might be a little cheaper. I suggest that you remove it so they don't try painting it while its still on the car.
