  • First SS Paint detail. Need Help.

This is my first SS paint. It has been repainted with a cheap macco job i believe. The car came to me with TONS of oxidation. I did what i could by hand with Ultimate Compound. It still seams like when i go over it again you can see small dots that "smudge" when i go over them like there is still more to get off. I'm getting a DA this week. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

Well it sure looks like you've made enormous progress here, so that's a major step in the right direction. As you're finding out, this is a lot of work by hand, so a D/A is going to make your life so much easier, and get the job done faster too.

Not sure about the smudging you're talking about though, unless you're either using too much product, not working it long enough, or a combination of the two. Your picture makes it look like things are going along as one would hope - can you show this smudging issue?

Thanks, in the sun it is still very bad though. Lots of scratches. I'm just nervous to do too much on the el-cheapo Single stage paint. The smudging is from going over the surface again. When it looked pretty good i tried to use a polish and it was as if i missed some oxidation and it was causing little circles to smear (hazy areas).

When i get the buffer should i just continue to use Ultimate detailer and where should i go from there? Just a cleaner/wax? This car does not need to be perfect. Just getting it ready to sell for the customer

Well, you can go over the car with the UC and see how things turn out. If you want a bit more cleaning without lots of time, something like ColorX (the Cleaner/Wax would be milder) would give some more cleaning, and get some oils and protection on there.

If you wanted to put in more time, you could look at a pure polish (DC Polish, #7) to get the oils on there, or a cleaner/polish like #80 to get some more cleaning and oils, then wax.

The more you do, the better it may look, but have to decide if it is worth it to you.
