  • Is this a case for the 2011 Paint Restoration Kit?

Hi everybody, I'm new to detailing and studied a lot this last couple of months before I could finally put it all in practice. My car is in fairly good condition but covered in swirls. Below I've posted some pictures to illustrate the problems.

Living in Brazil is hard to find a lot of Meguiar's products so I'm working on a list of necessary equipment to get the job done.

The 2011 Paint Restoration Kit is a good starting point, it has a Gold Class Wash, Clay bar and Quik Detailer, Ultimate Compound and Gold Class Carnauba Plus along with a couple applicator pads and Supreme Shine MF towels.
I'm also buying the Ultimate Polish and here is where the questioning begins.

I would rather use something less agressive to get rid of the swirls so I'm thinking about saving the Ultimate Coumpound for the bumper and some other RIDS (some I believe are a little too deep, but...) and use just Ultimate Polish to clean the paint.

    1. Can I expect to remove the majority of the swirls using just Ultimate Polish as a mild cleaner or do I need something else?

    2. Which one would you choose, Swirl X, Color X, DC cleaner/wax or something else?

    I'm working by hand.

Here is my Black 2009 Volkswagen Spacefox after a careful wash using the 2 bucket system:

That's one side of the story, now If you look closer:

this one looks worst than it is:

Now this ones I don't expect much:

That's it. Is it worst that I thought ? Can I tackle just with Ultimate Polish or do I just go for the Ultimate Combo (Coumpound + Polish)?

Thanks in advance, this is THE PLACE to be if you wan't to learn more about car care, I just wish I knew about it when I lived in San Diego!

    Tafner,

    Oi, bem vindo a MOL....

Obviously you know English very good from the wording in your post. I had the chance to view all your photos and I am very familiar with the way vehicles are washed in Brasil, I have traveled there and have seen this on many vehicles, this mostly due to operator error and inferior products. Honestly for you to achieve some decent results you will at least need to perform this paint correction using a D/A (dual action polisher). For even superior results a rotary polisher needs to be used to achieve the best correction. Some correction can be achieved manually, but I would recommend investing in a Meguiar's D/A for best results.

Looks like a perfect candidate for the Paint Restoration Kit.

        Hi David,

Tranks for the kind words. Your portuguese is also very good!

I bought this car used with just over 9 thousand miles a couple of months ago and the previous owner washed it without care. I've changed that but now it's time to correct the mistakes made.

I understand your point David, but it will probably take a couple of months of hard work before I could justify the investment of a D/A to my wife
        But one day...

In the meantime how do you think the paint on this Volkswagen would react to the Ultimate Compound ? Too soft or too Hard ?

As a matter of fact there is near my house a body shop that uses Meguiars products but they believe in using the MOST agressive product to get the job done, so I don't know...

        Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the input Shawn! That's exactly what I thought when I saw the kit.

            Hello Tafner.

be aware that when working by hand you have to perform the product 3 or 4 times to achieve good results. It's a pain, seriously.

Don't know about the hardness or softness of your car's paint but my dad's car is also a VW ( 2008 Gol ) and the cutting level of M80 was not enough to get the job done in 1 application by hand. And the paint is a little better than yours.

right now I'm using UC on my fiat palio and the results are better than expected. I know meguiars recomends to start with the least aggressive product but I think you can save time and money if you start with UC. Some strong compounds like UC may leave some haze over the paint, so I have also M80 to follow UC if needed.

Don't forget to perform a test spot first.

              Hi rodrigo,
I believe the 2008 Gol and my Spacefox have similar paint, but just a test spot will answer that.

I was thinking about following UC with the new Ultimate Polish, but there is still little info on it yet. But M80 is also a mild cleaner/polish, isn't it?

              Thanks for everybody

I think #80 would be a little stronger than the Ult. Polish.

If working by hand though, not sure you would see a lot of difference in cleaning ability.

Remember to read through the Working by Hand section in order to learn the best methods for removing swirls by hand. It is a time consuming process. I would recommend doing no more than one panel a day if you are looking for an almost perfect finish sice it takes a lot of work.

                    E ai blz,

                    Hi Tafner,

I spend a lot of my time in Brasil working with our partners there. I did some research and figured out how I can best help you.

                    1) I would definitely use Ultimate Compound to remove those swirls. Our partners in Brasil do not sell Swirlx and those swirls look pretty deep. Ultimate Compound would be the best choice for removing those defects.

                    2) If you are looking for products in Brasil, you can contact SB Rio or call them @ 02121898485 to see which products they have. If need additional assistance feel free to call Rodolfo (hes part of our team in Brasil) at +1938387476.

Thank you for your insight Murr, it means a lot!

Does #80 contain as much polishing oils as Ultimate Polish ?

And if applied just after UC the results would be comparable to UP?

                        Too many options

good advice Shawn, so you think if really concentrate my efforts one panel a day I could achieve those results ? That's great!
