  • how to use QD properly

need this answered from the pro's..

i know with quik wax its ok to spray on the surface directly...but wat about QD?

my friend thats been detailing for over 5 yrs always says you must spray the QD on the towel, not directly on the surface...
he says this way the dirt particles sink into the towel and you dont spread it around your car which makes a bunch of little dust piles that do make tiny scratches on the coat...

i been doing it this way ever since...is this correct or does it not matter?

The answer for both the spray waxes and spray detailers would be to do what the situation needs.

With a spray wax for instance, you can spray the surface, but a windy day may blow it all over, and you'll end up with spotting. On a calm day, you can do whatever you like, and I'll spray the towel and surface as I go, whatever I feel like.

Now the QD sprays will be similar. If you are doing a QD after a wash, and you spray a big area, and you may miss wiping and get spotting. However, if you were removing dust/dirt, you will want to make sure you have enough QD to lubricate the dirt and the surface to safely remove. Spraying the towel could be enough, for heavier dirt you may want to spray both. For something like bird droppings, or a big hard water drip, you may want to really soak the area and spray your towel some.

You should be fine either way, but spraying onto the paint puts the liquid in direct contact with the paint and the dust on that paint, potentially lifting the dust a bit before you wipe. QD is there basically to act as a lubricant, in the most basic function, so as to allow you to wipe off light dust and fingerprint smudges without scratching the paint. Maximum lubrication is probably achieved by having it on the paint first.
