  • Santa was delayed, but he finally arrived at my house in South Africa

    I finally received my package of a selection of the 2011 product line on Saturday.

    So far I have the following products:

    * Wheel Polishing Kit
    * Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit
    * Ultimate Polish
    * Ultimate Wax (Paste)
    * Ultimate Protectant (Spray)
    * Endurance Tire Gel (Spray)

    The collection

    The Headlight Restoration Kit consists of PlastX, Headlight Protectant, Velcro hand pad, Sanding Disc, Finishing Disc, Small wool buffing pad with drill attachment and a microfibre towel.

    The Wheel Polishing Kit contains the Dyna Cone, All Metal Polish and Foam Pad Cleaner.

    Once I had unpacked my new stash of goodies, I braved the inclement weather yesterday to put some of them through their paces.

    I decided to try out the Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Wax. First the two products themselves:

    Ultimate Polish

    A standard 16oz (473ml) bottle in the now familiar black and chrome Ultimate branding.

    Ultimate Paste Wax

    At the time of ordering, the liquid version of the Ultimate Wax was not yet available, so I decided to get the paste version in the meantime. I will get the liquid version as soon as it is available. The wax comes in a mini kit containing a metal tub with screw off lid, a foam applicator and a black Supreme Shine microfibre cloth. The lid of the can also serves as a storage space for the foam applicator, which means you can keep it together with the can and always primed and ready for action.

    In action

    The Ultimate Polish is very similar in appearance and consistency to its cousin from the professional range - M205. The product is easy to apply and has a long working time. The polishing oils are very apparent and the product works down to a light, slightly oily residue which is easily wiped away with a microfibre towel. It leaves a clear, glossy finish that cries out for a nice LSP to seal in the depth and clarity.

    The Ultimate Paste Wax doesn't have an amazing scent that one expects from the Meguiars range, and instead smells just, well.......waxy. Although in solid form, it is fairly soft and a quick twirl of the applicator pad in the tin picked up enough wax to cover half of the bonnet and the whole fender. It goes on very easy, and after I had let it haze for +-10 minutes is wiped off just as easy, leaving a clear, deep and wet finish. With the inclement weather, there was no bright, direct sunlight around to judge the final finish in full, harsh lighting.

    The one criticism I have of the kit is that the included microfibre towel is not up to the standard of the original Supreme Shine microfibre towels.

    Nice haul If there's one new 11' product that i've been wanting to try, it would be the Ultimate polish.

      I have not got one of those wheel polishing kits, but I am incredibly curious about the foam cone. I've asked before, but never got a hard yes or no answer. Can this be used on paint? There are areas where a "cone" style pad like this would come in very handy for me! Like the doors on a 348 Ferrari where they are concaved and rounded. Would love to hear your feedback on the density of the foam, and if you believe it would be safe for use on paint.

      Thanks!

        Nick,

        Mr. Stoops stated in the wheel polishing kit thread that this cone is not intended for paint:

        For clear coated wheels you're better off using something like SwirlX by hand, or even ColorX.

          Nick - the foam is quite dense, and a lot closer to the W7xxx pads than the W8xxx pads. As Joel has already posted, the official Meguiars stance is that the DynaCone is not meant for use on paint. However, in the usual MOL spirit of experimentation I will be trying it out on paint and will post my findings/thoughts.

              Awesome! I know what Stoops said, but he doesn't know everything(don't tell him I said that).

              Please let me know your thoughts on this for paint. This would be incredibly handy for some cutting work on some of these cars I do.

              Thanks,

                  Autogeek - shipping is a bit pricey, but cost is not something that stands between a junkie and his stash

                    Thanks Joel - in hindsight, the pics aren't very good. I was trying to take close up's showing the product in action. Once I've done the whole car, I'll post some wider angle shots.

                      IMO the best retailer of detailing products.

                      Nice collection you got there! Autogeek just released the UW liquid too!

                      Please let us know what you think of the foam cleaner! Maybe we can also use it for our softbuff foam pads!

                        I know - just a few days after this order shipped. Not to worry, my order for it was completed earlier today .

                        Another "not recommended by Meguiars" action which I will be experimenting with.

                          Nick, knowing you you're going to experiment with the cone on paint no matter what we tell you, and that's fine. M105 on leather.... really????? Just remember that you will do so at your own risk. In some cases it may work fine, but in many others it may haze the heck out of the paint. We are fully aware that you know how to correct hazed paint, talented guy that you are, but we don't want other less knowledgeable folks going down that road. And don't get too upset with Shawn, he didn't tell me you wrote what you did.

                          Again, not recommended by us. The cleaner is specially formulated for removing the oxidized metal captured by the pad when cleaning bare metal surfaces. It hasn't been tested on removing compounds, polishes, etc, nor has it been tested for long term compatibility with the foam used in the various paint specific pads. Again, we know a lot of you guys are going to experiment, just keep in mind you do so at your own risk. If it works great, then that's awesome. But if it messes something up, remember who told you not to do it in the first place!!!
