  • Applying polish over a wax?

to start off when i put my car away for the winter i put a fresh coat of wax on it. now i wanted to use Deep crystal paint cleaner and polish, as well as some scratch x or something along those lines.

would i be wasting my time if i applied polish and scratch x over an existing wax without washing the old wax off?

To answer your question, no, it wouldn't necessarily be waste of time, however there are a few things that need to be pointed out based on your post:

You wouldn't apply polish and then ScratchX.

You also wouldn't apply polish after waxing.

ScratchX will remove the wax, so will strong dish soap.

    The correct steps would be:

    DC Paint Cleaner
    ScratchX
    Polish
    Wax

Wax is always the last product to be added because it is the external surface. Polish is always applied directly to paint because the polish contains oils that actually moisturize the paint and keep it conditioned, as well as adding gloss and filling in fine scratches. The wax essentially seals that in so you can maintain the high gloss appearance that your polish creates.

    Hope that helps.

Re: Applying polish over a wax?

sorry the last post may have been a little confusing. i know that im not supposed to put scratch x or a polish on after i wax. i was unsure that because i had old wax already on the car, if the polish or scratch x would have any affect on the clear coat?

ill try to explain it a little better here.

the last time i waxed it was about 3 months ago. i was planning on doing a complete detail again while the car was in storage. my question was can i do a complete detail without washing the old wax off with dawn?

the paint cleaner or scratchX will take off the wax you previously applied or a session with the clay bar. I see no reason to use Dawn or other non-automotive soaps on the car.

How long ago did you wash and wax? Has the car been outdoors since then?

If not too long ago and not much activity outdoors, one thing you could do is wash the car with Gold Class or Ultimate Wash and Wax and then dry the car with Ultimate Quik Wax. This might be fine, especially if the car is going back into storage.

Not sure what the weather is like in Rhode Island right now, so will you be working indoors?

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but could you use Quik Detailer right after you Quik Wax or NXT 2.0?

I started wondering since you said wax usually goes on last.

                ^yes u can

when they said wax goes on last they mean that u wont apply a wax and then polish on top because the wax is what seals the paint..so u would want polish and then wax above to seal in the polish as well

Re: Applying polish over a wax?

last time the car was washed and waxed was the end of October.
yes i will be working indoors seeing as its 20 degrees out and about 10" of snow on the ground lol
since its last wash and wax it has not been outside, and once finished it will go back into storage until spring
