Re: Polishing the glass
Think about glass as 10 times harder than a car paint.
If you try to remove scratches or chips out of it even M105 won't be strong enough but for small problems it will work.
Just be careful when you use a rotary buffer as intense glass buffing will generate a lot of heat.
Lake Country, Griot's Garage and Diamondite have special kits for glass repair and polishing. They come with special glass cutting pads:

Re: Polishing the glass
M105 on a D/A or even rotary should do a decent job of removing water spots and wiper lines, but if you've got that very fine pitting that shows up as little sparkles when the sun is low, you're sort of out of luck. That comes from the windshield basically being sand blasted over time and you won't be able to polish that out with M105, and probably not with much of anything else without using very highly specialized materials.Michael Stoops

Sanding won't work because you'll just add new scratches and won't be able to remove them either.
But as Mike said M105 will take care of smaller problems and overall improve the look.
