  • Does anyone else hate fluorescent lights?

I am experimenting with different types of lighting for detailing in my garage. I use fluorescent lights for general lighting and then halogens for when I need to polish paint.

I know everyone seems to use fluorescent lights, however I really don't like the way they light up the car. First of all they cast a ton of shadows which means I easily miss some spots when washing or removing wax. Secondly they don't do much to show the true condition of the paint.

I was thinking of ditching them and putting in lots of regular compact fluorescent light bulbs instead which appear to show swirls and other imperfections much better, you can even see some holograms with them in my experience.

I was curious if anyone else shares my opinion and what others use for lighting.

    Thanks!

I don't think you can do without having BOTH. Halogens are great for swirls but I seem to find water spots better with florescent lights. Plus when you're just washing or doing interiors the florescent is much better during the summer time when all that extra heat isn't wanted.

      Go with the daylight style
Most fluorescents are 3200 degrees Calvin
you want day light the 5600 or the 4200 it will make a HUGE! difference
I put 4 , 6 bangers in my garage and Wow! its bright, then I also use a Dual Xenon incandescent Brick-man and the LED Brick-man to find the swirls
The LED Brick-man gives off to much blue , but it is good for my deep purple truck, not so good with the Black truck.
Fluorescence work well if you have the right bulb.
Stay a way from the normal 3200 degree Calvin bulbs
Hologens are good also but again use the daylight ones
and yes they do produce a lot of heat

thats is why I bought halogen bulbs to see the swirl marks better.
