  • Oil on Paint

    Hey guys,

I started to do an oil change on my car and when the time came to put in new oil, I put in 5 quarts and during the last quart, the bottle tipped over out of the funnel and all over the paint of the car and onto one of the headlights. I then tried to wash it off and that didn't work at all. Then i grabbed a clay bar and that didn't do anything either. SO what do I do now? Its kin of dried onto the paint now as well. It was a full synthetic oil if that helps.

    Thanks

Any kind of solvent/adhesive remover should work. Just be careful, any kind of solvent may strip the wax.

I think you'll be removing the wax no matter what.

Some kind of degreaser, APC, Dawn, paint cleaner are all options.

I take my cars to a place every fall that sprays the undercarriage with motor oil to prevent rust from the salted roads in winter. Some of this oil gets on the paint and you need to wash once with dawn dish soap, regular car soap will not work. Just use a separate bucket from the one you usually use to wash your car and prepare to get a new wash mitt because it will gum up and ruin your wash mitt. Only once is needed though. Rewax when your done.

I have never heard of having the undercarriage sprayed like that. How long will that last and what does it cost? What are the chances that the oil will fling off onto the cars behind you as you are driving?

Seen grease, oil applied at hidden areas such as behind door panels. In summer some grease drips off.Wonder how fast these vehicles would burn with a fire start.

We get our cars sprayed every year..under and inside the panels. It lasts a year, and if you get it done every year, the company guarantees no rust.
It is not automobile oil, but is specially formulated to creep into every crevasse. Ii will drip for about a day and then it stops. It does not filing off or catch fire like someone posted. $80 per car.
I was looking at the brake lines on one of our cars..6 years old..and they are like new. Well worth it if you live in the north and travel salted roads.

mswerb I see your right down the street from me in cleveland. Google ultra-cote akron, they offer the rustproofing services. They explain on their website in detail. The oil spray lasts one year and nothing ever rusts. You need to get it resprayed every fall.

Thanks. I tried the APC but it only got some of it off. Then I went and tried to use dawn and that took it right out somehow.

What did you use to get it off the paint?

                      A wash mitt?

Yep I took a wash mitt and scrubbed on it for a good two minutes to finally get it off. Then I threw it out as it was getting old anyway. Afterwards, I threw on some M20 and it was as good as before.
