  • Clear coat after 'correcting' bird bomb

Hi, and yes I'll try and get some pics, but the ones from my cell didn't really show much last night, so I'll have to hunt out one of the digital cameras.

Anyway, my issue is.... many days ago during the day at work I suffered a dreaded bird bomb on my roof, and didn't get to it straight away. By the time I had cleaned it off it had baked on pretty well in the sun. When I gave it a cleanup with some detailer later it still left a typical etching mark like most bird bomb photos, around the size of a large (50c) coin.

I tried cleaning it up with Ultimate Compound by hand, and it didn't really reduce it much, certainly didn't 'remove' it. So over three different occasions after washing the roof, I have spent a few minutes working Ultimate Compound into it by hand.. and fairly vigourously..

Well, last night I had another look, and when I rubbed it with the compound, colour started coming off onto my foam pad.. .. My fear here is, have I rubbed the clear coat away?

As I say, the size of the area, is about the size of a large coin on my roof... Visually, if you look down, the dark metallic blue just appears a little lighter. When you get down on the right angle, the surface isn't super smooth, and still looks marred... almost raised... but you have to be looking pretty hard to notice. If you stand back and know where to look, the most you really notice is a slight discolouration on a coin size patch of the roof. Give it two days of dust from sitting outside, and you probably wouldn't notice unless you knew it would be there.

Anyway, my main concern is that rubbing colour onto the pad doesn't sound like a good thing, and I fear I may have worn through the clear coat... advice greatfully appreciated, thanks.

Unfortunately we think you've answered your own question here - and it's the answer you really wanted. Certainly some good pictures will help, but if you're suddenly getting color transfer onto your applicator, that's a sure sign you've gone through the clear coat.
