  • Repaint of front bumper help

    Hey guys,

Well I have just decided to go ahead and repaint the front bumper of my car. It is a gray Ford Mustang GT and the bumper has various dents and chips well in the paint from rocks and bugs. Anyhow, I figured that I would have to sand it down as much as I can and then buy some paint and just spray on it. Now, the car is barley driven when the sun is fully out and is never even touched in the winter so need to worry about salt. I'm not worried about a fancy paint job or anything (as long as it shines somewhat) but after putting the base coat on, can compound by hand or would I need to have a machine?

    1. What paint should I get?
    2. Would clear coat be necessary?

Just to make sure I got this, you first put on a primer then a base coat and then a clear coat. Right?

Thank You for reading this confusing thread and for the help

Are you planning on using a spray gun or rattle cans? Take it to a bodyshop and get it done right would be my suggestion. The bumper is plastic so that makes the job even harder. Your going to need a flex agent. You DO NOT buff the basecoat at all by the way. Save yourself the hassles and get it done right.

As TBB states, you probably would be better off, getting it done professionally. Bumpers need a special flex paint and if there is not too much damage, probably would only cost $200 to $400. Worth it in my opinion.

I also agree with the two before me. Save some money up and get it done professionally.

There's no way you'll be able to do the right job unless you have the proper tools, equipment, materials and utilize industry standard processes. BTW, not all paint line utilize Flex Additive as most modern paint is flexible by design.
