  • How much wax is needed??

    Hello everyone,

I just received my M2611 paste wax.
I am new to applying paste wax.
I remember Meguiar's always emphasizes that applying THIN is the way to go...
I have a little question related to that...

If someone is applying the wax THIN:
    1. For an ordinary mid size sedan, roughly how many gram (g) or ounce (oz) of paste wax is usually needed to cover the whole car's painted surfaces?

    2. Very often I wash/clean/polish/wax my car at night. Lighting is not so good in my apartment's underground carpark. Sometimes, the layer of wax I applied is barely visible. I can hardly see where I actually applied. Am I applying too little wax, or barely visible is the true meaning of THIN??

    Thanks for teaching me that...
Meguiar's products are very affordable and easy to use.
They give good result even for ordinary users with little experience like me.

Have you seen this thread? It's not exactly the wax you're using, but I think the information will be helpful.

While we're sure someone, somewhere has actually taken weight readings of a can of paste wax before and after application in order to determine just how much was used, we don't have an exact number for you.

But, if that person used barely any wax to get the job done and you use double that amount, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the article that David linked to we used barely half an ounce of liquid wax to cover an entire car. If you were to use double, or even triple that, not only would you not be out of line, but you'd still be applying the wax far thinner than the average consumer usually does. While thin is important, don't sacrifice uniform coverage for the sake of trying to go as thin as possible.

So don't stress too much over the exact amount needed. Keep this in mind, though - when using a brand new can of paste wax the product in the can should not look much different after first use than it did when you initially opened the can.

Amazing and detailed information on your link wifpd4!

Some how I have an impression (which might be wrong. correct me if i am wrong.) that,
you use less paste wax than liquid wax as you wax your car,
hence Meguiar's gives you 16-18oz for liquid, but only 11oz for paste,
while they cost the same and they should last the same number of applications.

          Right,
I guess detailing car is an experience meant to be fun, enjoyable...
Relax and find the way I like to apply wax is good~~

          BTW,
          another question,
I have been using the purple round foam pad that come with the NXT 2.0 liquid wax.
It appears to me that the first few droplets of liquid NXT will mostly be absorbed by the foam applicator pad and do not give me much area to be covered on car.
But after the foam is wet, I can use less NXT to cover same area.
          normal right?

it is 23:56 here in hong kong (GMT+8) now...
i go to bed now and come back tmr morning...

That is a great observation, and 100% correct. A year or so ago we had a young guy at one of our Thursday Night Open Garage sessions who was using way too much NXT on his black Honda Civic. The pad was heavy with product, and we talked his girlfriend into waxing the other side of the car with that pad, but without adding any fresh product!! After doing so, there was probably still enough NXT in that pad to do another car. You could literally squeeze the NXT out of the pad it was so overloaded.

The point being, once that pad is "damp" with product you don't need to add as much to it to continue. In fact, in the article David linked to, you'll see how toward the end we literally pressed the pad against the car to force a bit of wax out of it, rather than add more to it. And we could do that even though we only used half an ounce of product!

Re: How much wax is needed??

I think I saw a older post in a sticky type link where someone showed some expensive boutique liquid wax and how little can be used to do an entire car. My issue is that I am heavy handed and as much as I love paste wax I tend to overload as well and typically it becomes hard to remove the product, especially NXT.

I ended up getting a cont. of Liquid NXT 2.0 and with a Cheap'o Autozone Buffer, a.k.a. Cheapo Wax Spreader I managed to do 2 vehicles with in a fraction of the time and the actual amout of wax used was signifgantly reduced compared to hand application.

I may take a extra few minutes to set up the buffer but the on/off ease is well worth it, plus I save on wasting product.

This is my exp. and I hope it helps.

                okay...
                thanks for the reply
I think NXT is generally easy to apply and remove,
make metal flakes pop like nothing I have seen b4...

so far I am happy with most of the Meguiar's products I have,
except UWW (and NXT Insane Shine aerosol spray...) that the container's lid is broken and leaked half bottle of that after I use it once... guess it is not Meguiar's problem,
Believe Meg out-sourced it to plastic bottles manufacturer...

A tin of 11oz,311grams of cleaner wax gives me around 20 waxes.
Thin does it,the surfaces just have to be covered.
