  • 'Catching' Scratch X and Polish

    Hey guys,

Just finished importing another car, so I'm on a mission to clean it up!

As you can imagine after sitting on the docks for awhile and a big trip from Japan to here, the paint condition was putrid. The car is actually black but it arrived almost grey with oxidation and other ****.

The vehicle was given a light cut with Porzelack, and then hand polished with deep crystal and it came up great, this was 3 months ago. Since then it has aquired a few light scratches, and here lies the problem. On my other cars Scratch X rubs on easy, and comes of easy. However on this car, even on the lighest scratch, the Scratch X rubs on fine but its very very difficult to remove! Infact in some cases it takes a spray with quik detailer to remove its residue. It just doesnt come off easy!

What is causing this, infact the polish even seems to behave the same. The finish is in good nick no oxidation etc.

Thanks in advance for your help, search didnt yield much.

    Hi Pazrs,

    Interesting....

A couple of questions, what are you removing the ScratchX and the Deep Crystal Polish with?

Are you working the ScratchX in well before removing?

Are you letting these products dry before removing?

What is the temperature you are applying these products?

A Megs Microfibre type cloth, sorry I forget exactly which one, it is light blue.

Are you working the ScratchX in well before removing?

Yes the product is well worked in, and done in smallish patches as recommended.

Are you letting these products dry before removing?

The products are quite dry and powdery when removed, perhaps too much so?

What is the temperature you are applying these products?

Im starting to think this is the very problem, the air temperature is quite high. About 40 degrees (104 degree Fahrenheit). However the paint temp is quite low, as all washing and polishing etc. is done in a garage.

If you're letting these products dry before removing them, this is improper technique.

All Meguiar's Compounds, Paint Cleaners, Cleaner/Polishes and Pure Polishes should be removed immediately after they are worked into to the finish. They should not be allowed to dry first.

Only Meguiar's waxes need to dry before removing.

Allowing a paint cleaner like the ScratchX or a pure polish like the Deep Crystal Polish will make them dramatically more difficult to remove, especially in warm, dry climates.

Try using them again, working a section or area at a time and after working the product into the finish, immediately remove it using a clean, soft 100% cotton towel, or a premium quality microfiber polishing cloth.

Thanks for that Mike, just to clear up Im not letting the products sit there and dry, they are generally a little powdery by the time I have put the ScratchX back on the shelf and grabbed the microfibre cloth.

I think I will try working faster and doing smaller areas at a time, its a lot hotter then the last time I was using ScratchX.

          Thanks Again :

            Hey,

            Just to add...

I think part of the problem is the temperature. If the humidity is high or the air temperture is high, you may find it a little more difficult to remove the product. Hopefully you will get a break from the extreme heat!

Maybe I should just set a day and get up very early and do it in the cool of the morning Too busy in the evening.

Just wondering if Meguairs has ever considered/produced a additive for hot/dry conditions? Im no chemist but I dont imagine it impossible.

Just like Retarder/Reducer for 2 pack
