Re: Lessons?
I don't know too much about lessons in New York, but what I can tell you is that you can get a Dual-Action polisher such as Meguiar's G110v2 or Griots Random Orbital Polisher. This will give you a lot of power but pretty much prevent you from being able to damage the paint. You say that you want to remove minor swirls and defects. Well, dual-action polishers are great for this and can even remove more severe defects and swirls as well. In addition, they can apply wax to speed up that process as well.
If you need to see detailing in action, check out Autogeek's videos. They are very good and will help you greatly.-HealthyCivic

Re: Lessons?
Of course if you do things wrong, you could cause swirls with a DA. But if you do things slightly wrong with a rotary, you can burn through the paint.
Since swirls are fixable, there is a much bigger margin of error.
The Porter Cable is an option, it is in between Meguiars old G100 and the new G110. The G100 was the standard for 10 years or so until recently, so it certainly works. Its not quite as good, but if cheap enough, could balance out.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR Blue

Re: Lessons?
The nearest to NY I know of is KLEEN CAR (New Milford, New Jersey) provides detailed education for the detailing profession. This is the most comprehensive training program of its kind. This same program has been implemented by BMW of North America and is used to train their network of dealers. 888 – 302- 6400
