  • Removing the swirls revealed the scratches

Been working on a 2007 BMW Alpine White.

From a distance the paint looks great, but in the proper lighting the swirls were really bad.

I ended up doing three passes with a Porter Cable DA, orange pad, and Ultimate Compound and then a polishing glaze. Nice and shiny!

But... there are still scratches (not swirls) I can't get out and they seem to be more noticeable now that the paint is nice and shiny.

These scratches are smooth. What should I try next?

Are you sure they are scratches and not swirls or hazing caused by the UC? Which polishing glaze did you use?

Assuming that they are scratches (RIDS), I would try again with UC or M105 in just the spots where the scratches are.

Perhaps grab a 4" pad and focus on one scratch at a time.

4" pads tend to have a greater correcting ability than the larger pads...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

yep - these are straight scratches that were already there. The glaze is Wolfgang Finishing glaze 3.0.

Nice tip on the 4"pad. I have one that I used on my headlights - didn't think about it for this. I'll give it a go.
