  • Sacrifice Clear Coat?

Hey Guys.....I've got a question that may sound silly to some of you ,but here goes..... I've got a 2010 Tacoma (magnetic gray) it has some orange peel from the factory that I would like to remove with my high speed buffer and DA. Will I be taking a dangerous amount of clear coat off to satisfy my desire for a smooth glass like finish? I can live with the peel if I would be getting to close down. I would like to have my cake and eat it too, but I don't want to sacrifice too much clear coat. What do you Pros think?

You wont remove the orange peel with a buffer, would have to wet sand some.

Probably not the best idea, but some people choose to do it.

Ok Murr that makes sense , but why is the peel absent from the hood and only on the sides?

Dont know that... would be interesting. Maybe they use a different spray mixture for sides...

              Re: Sacrifice Clear Coat?

Removing orange peel from factory paint is really hard to achieve but not impossible. It all depends on your clear coat thickness and you need to measure it first.

If you have healthy level you can:
              - wet-sand it and compound/ polish,
              - damp-sand it and compound/ polish.

If there's only a thin layer you can:
              - use heavy compound/ rotary buffer to improve reflection (not complete
              removal),
              - leave it alone and accept this defect.

99% of the time. you will not be able to remove the wetsanding marks with a d/a.
You would have to be proficient with a rotary to do this. Plus you would be wise to invest in a paint thickness gauge to measure each area to see how much your working with.

I would just live with the orange peel.
                quality creates its own demand

Yeah, factory clear coar usually is not thick enough to remove the orange peel.
