  • Glass with shadows after vinyl removal

    hi there

I have removed vinyl lettering from my truck and noticed in the rear windshield that you can still see the shadows of the letters that were there.

I'm pretty sure they're burnt in the tinting because of the heat and exposure to this brutal TX sun. Glass is factory tinted and I wanted to see if any of you guys ever had to deal with this issue and what did you do to solve it.

I'm not sure if tinting over the existing tint will help, I'd hate to install a perforated film with a design on it to cover that since I'm trying to get the truck ready to sell it.

    Any suggestion would be appreciated

    thanks

Not going to be good if it is burned into the tint....

Get some Bar Keeper's Friend from the grocery store. Cost is about $ 2.00. Make a paste by mixing the dry powder with distilled water. Do not get dry powder on the glass.

I used this process to remove the same type problem from several of the windows on an old Blue Bird Bus that had a heavy factory tint.

Saw this method on the Hot Rod TV cable program 10 years ago. I have been cleaning my auto glass with it ever since.

Test it to make sure it does not scratch.

Mine did this with a decal that has been on the back window for some time. Though, the tint has only been on since June? I'm not sure what the problem is. Was planning on calling the tint place one of these days...

From the first post, it sounds like the same as paint would do.

The tint under the decal is the original color, and the rest has lightened from the sun.

That make sense. Will try the bar keeper's thing and if not I have another stuff I can use.
We own a window cleaning company, and I realized that maybe the deal is on the exterior side of the glass being slightly etched from the elements (wind+dust) and some polishing can even it up. If the problem is the tint I have no idea what to do.

thanks for the suggestions and I'll report back once I get the truck back from the shop

Yeah, the Barkeepers friend, clay, etc would work to remove gunk built up around the edges, if that was the case.

Well, I already did the clay as soon as I noticed that, right after I removed the vinyl and it did nothing. truck would be out of the shop tomorrow probably.
