  • Chrome Scratch-HELP

I have NO idea where of how this chrome scratch occurred - not a result of someone lifting up the hood and scraping it against low headroom and NEVER been in car wash with brushes. In any case Brian from Meguiar's on line suggested Hot Rims liquid chrome polish/cleaner would be a good place to start. Anyone else have repair suggestions for home DIY'er and enthusiast auto-detail-er?

Is that in chrome, or the plastic trim kind of chrome?

Well, I believe it is actually metal chrome. It sounds and sort of feels like it is metal. It is on the front of the GMC Terrain - on the hood.

          Pretty sure that's plastic.

OK-maybe it is plastic, but feels sort or hard like metal.

Let's try two scenarios - How to fix if it is plastic without destroying the shine, OR what product and method to use if it is metal, to restore clear appearance?

            Thanks for any good advice.

              Re: Chrome Scratch-HELP

I would like to know as well.

For me, I see some fine scratch on the thin chrome trim around the shifter base plate. This one should be plastic.

How about rubbing it with SwirlX to remove the scratches?

Isn't swirlx for paint? I don't know that it would work on a plastic or metal finish. It may be a different chemistry all together.

                  Re: Chrome Scratch-HELP

I would go with the Hot Rims Chrome Polish.

As a side note, chrome is chrome. Technology has allowed auto manufacturers to apply chrome to plastic instead of metal thus reducing vehicle weight and still providing the same protective properties and looks. There is absolutely no difference between chromed metal and chromed plastic other than the material the chrome has been applied to.

Hot Rims Chrome Polish is going to be your best starting point. Just keep in mind that chrome is very hard stuff, so polishing out a scratch can be darn near impossible. Some light hazing or dulling, yes, but a deep scratch..........

Good to know. I won't bother then.
It's a scratch, don't know if it"s considered light or deep.
Don't show too much. Don't want to make it worse.
