  • Fine Scratches, What to use?

    Hey guys,

I've noticed my 03 Corolla has very fine scratches on the drivers side rear and there are already a few minor paint chips. I'm unsure of which product(s) to use on it so I wanted input from you guys. Would hitting it with Scratch-X make a difference?

    Thanks!

    Hey corolla858,

First off, I removed the links and left the embedded picture as forum rules ask new members to reach 30 posts before posting outside links.

That said, I looked at the largest picture - you for sure have clear coat failure. It is very weird that it is manifesting itself in this way, but it was obvious - especially near the trunk - that the clear coat was totally dead and peeling away.

Unfortunately this will need to be repainted.

thanks for your input, Mark! I already have to repaint my front end and the quarter panel where the clearcoat is peeling off of is a huge piece..so i'm thinking I should respray my car the same color, what do you think?

Looks like the spoiler is starting as well, it's probably time to do the whole car.

It's going to cost a pretty penny in labor to sand the whole thing down - but it definitely needs it. If someone cuts corners on the paint job you are looking for trouble with a failing clearcoat underneath.

Just make sure it is done right.

          Can you feel the scratches??

I say this because I had a buddy with a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am and the odd thing that happen is that it looked like someone repainted the rear quarter from the factory. Used rough sand paper and then re cleared. Never saw it until after the 2nd cold weather (car is always parked).

To the feel/touch it was smooth as glass and well waxed but under halogens looks like someone hit it with hard with sandpaper or a scotchbrite pad. GM would not warrentee as it was not under the rot/rust clause.

Car is now a drag car and still looks phenominal but when he filled in the attenna hole. the quarter got redone as well. The painter did check the depth and it was thicker then the rest.

          Go fig.
