  • Some Questions About Waxing..

    Hi Guys!

    Last weekend, I tried my first comprehensive detailing with;

    1) Smooth clay kit
    2) Cleaner Wax
    3) NXT Tech Wax

Now, I'm wondering if the experts here can advise me,

    1) How long can the coat of NXT Tech wax last? How do i know it is time to put on a new coat of wax?

    2) Should I continue to wax my car weekly?

    3) I understand the coat of wax may gets thicker and thicker as times goes by if I do it weekly, is this actually good for protection?

    4) Or should I just do a bi-weekly waxing, with using UQW and UQD in between each week.

    5) When would be my next claying session? Every 2-3 months?

    Thank you!

Hmm, there are many variables to the questions you asked, so it's hard to give black & white answers.

    1) Depends on many, many different factors but anywhere from 1 month to 6 months. Is your car garaged? Driven daily?
There is a sticky thread by Mike Phillips here somewhere that describes a good method to tell when you need to re-apply wax. It's called the Sqeak Test. See if you can find it by using the Search function.

    2) Depends on what you're trying to achieve and how much time/effort you have or are willing to put in. Generally though, I'd consider that a bit of overkill.

    3)That's fine.

    4) This sounds like a good plan. Some may even say it's a bit much but if you have the time and enjoy a freshly waxed car, then why not!

    5) Again, it really depends on what the car is exposed to. Generally though every 6 months would probably be sufficient.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Oh, I just found that thread about the Squeak Test:

This is the best way to tell when it's time to re-apply wax.

        3. NXT has cleaner in it so your removing some product when you reapply. The only real reason to reapply NXT is to make sure you have full and even coverage. Also check out a thread on layering and the diminishing return factor (search those terms). If you want to wax weekly, my recommendation would be to lay down a solid coat of NXT and then use a carnauba like M26 weekly or by-weekly.

        4. Spray wax is certainly intended for then exact purpose of maintenance in between full details. It looks great and is a solid alternative to the above. However, if you enjoy the process of waxing like I do, you'll probably not think much of spray wax.

I think you'l lfind if you wash and use UQW weekly, your base of Nxt 2.0 will last more than 2 weeks.

Usually the QD or QW will be able to spread better when the base of wax is still good. They wont spread as well when the wax deteriorates some.

            1) i usually pour a glass of water over the passenger door, if the water gets all sticky over the paint, then it needs a re-wax. It all depends on how ofthen you drive/wash the car and what other products you applied on the paint. For example, bug/tar remover also removes wax layer, car wash also strips away a thin layer of the already very thin wax coat. In my case, i drive the car 3-4times a week, wash evern 10- 14days and my wax usually lasts a good 2-3 months.

              thanks guys!

By the way, is Meguiars Cleaner Wax suitable for frequent detailing? Or would it better if I only use it after I clay each time, eg; 2-3 months. And for frequent waxing, i will just use NXT Tech wax?

                  1) Nxt 2.0 is one the best around, so it will surely stay for a month atleast.
                  2) I would say Don't. You can use Quik detailer instead.
                  3) 2-3 layers are good. But anything more than that is going to eat up the shine. I would suggest a layer of Nxt topped with M26.
                  4) Yes you can
                  5) A big for claying mate. And its absolutely necessary if the car is new. However, avoid using a used clay bar. I dispose it off after using it twice. And please don't apply too much pressure while claying the car.
                  Cheers

Now, I'm wondering if the experts here can advise me,
                    1) How long wax "last" varies on many factors, regions, temps, where the car is stored and wax matience. I physically wax my cars twice a year, spring and fall and boost it every wash.

                    2) Like said in #1, I do not, unfortunately wax builds up and you will get whats called diminishing returns.

                    3) I refer to my previous statement. But I will add that just simply keeping up on it is a big help. Like in North East region of the US, I can get away with washing every 2-3 weeks but go 5, the car REALLY needs it.

                    4) Wash every week or every other week. Once dried always hit it with Ult Quick Wax and a good MF towel. Will be the best protection you can give the car. Ult Quick detailer IMO is for getting dust off cars in the garage, if it sits outside and gets contamination on it, then your risking putting more scratches in the paint.

                    5) Everytime you plan on paint correction, or applying a good base for wax. If you clay, your removing the majority of previous wax sessions so do not try to do work over again.

My situation is that I deal with the elements and I have no real place to work, UNTIL this past week so things like a wax regiment will change and I will have more time to take a car down, clean, wash, vac, clay, wax, boost and so on and so forth.

You have a very good foundation and you will be fine.

Sorry for acknowledging the reply late, have been really busy for the past couple of days..but anyway, appreciate all the helpful advices and tips.

It has been quite an awfully hazy days here in Singapore due to the haze spread from the Sumatra area and it rains for the past 2 days but it didn't helps either, instead the rain was pretty polluted with the haze and my car was in a total "mess" after a session of rain..
