Re: measuring pads HELP
As long as the velcro areas of the mount line up pretty well with the velcro areas on the pad you should be good to go. My Porter Cable XP7424 that I got around 4 or 5 years ago has a 5 inch velcro plate and I use the Meguairs Soft buff 2.0 7 inch pads as my go to pad series with no issues.

Re: measuring pads HELP
If you stop and think about it, you don't want your backing plate to be the same diameter as your pad. The edge of backing plate would then be exposed and could (would, in fact) cause serious problems around edges, trim, lights, etc.
Our W68DA backing plate, the one designed specifically for use with our Soft Buff 2.0 pads, is just shy of 6" in diameter. But even more important than that is the construction of the piece - it has a firm but flexible edge that supports the outer reaches of the pad while still letting the pad conform to panel contours. Too small or too sharp edged of a backing plate won't support the outer portion of the pad and could even start to cut into the backer of the pad.Michael Stoops
