  • Need a little help

    Hey Guys
I have finally reached a level of confidence with my new PCXP that I'm ready to tackle a friends white Taco. The paint is a 7 or 8 on a 10 point scale. Give me the products to use and the order to use them. I know there are a lot of variables but I think I can deal with that. I can use any info you're kind enough to give. One more thing, how many pads will I need to do this job, and can I use a pad if its still a little wet from a wash? thax so much

    Re: Need a little help

    I would want dry pads.

What did you get before? SwirlX and UC will tackle most anything, and are easy to find. Or 105/205, or one of each mild and strong cleaner.

If you take those, some clay and wax, you should be able to handle anything.

Do two test spots on the hood, side by side, one with UC and the other with SwirlX (different pad for each product). Work each as you normally would and wipe off the residue, then pull the truck back into direct sunlight and evaluate the finish. From there you'll know which of the two products is going to yield the best result on this particular vehicle.

Let's assume, just for argument's sake, that UC does the better job and leaves the paint looking darn near perfect. Since this truck is white you probably won't gain much from M07 but you might be able to add some clarity to the finish by following the UC with SwirlX on a black finishing pad. It's certainly worth another quick test to see if you gain anything.

But once you've gotten the defects out to your, and your friend's, satisfaction all you really need to do is wax it. NXT Tech Wax 2.0 would be great on any white vehicle.

Swirl X on a black finish pad? I have never tried this. mmmmm interesting Michael. Is this colour specific? May be worth trying this on my deep black pearl.

I know on my vw I used u/c on a yellow polish pad followed by swirl x on a yellow pad. But then moved onto dc02 on a black finish pad.

What results or gains have you seen? I know you mentioned clarity.

              Please explain more?

                Re: Need a little help

SwirlX is a light cleaning product similar in cut to M205 but in an overall different formulation. Still, it uses very similar SMAT abrasives to M205 and is a nice step down in aggressiveness from Ultimate Compound in much the same way M205 is from M105.

There are times when almost any D/A correction can haze certain paints and a nice gentle follow up can do wonders for the finish. That can be something as simple as ColorX, or a nice step up to a finishing polish like SwirlX if you prefer using NXT, Gold Class, M26, etc as your LSP. SwirlX offers a very long buffing cycle, a good amount of polishing oils and that light cleaning ability that can really help with final clarity.

It isn't necessarily color dependent, but it is going to be paint dependent, which is why we recommend doing a test spot.

                  Re: Need a little help

                  Great tip

So would I still need to use dc02 or just move straight to a wax?

I thought swirl X was just a medium cut not a polish as well.

The more time I spend on this forum the more knowledge I gain.

Just when I think I have a clear understanding there is more to think about. Thanks Michael

                    Re: Need a little help

You don't need to use Deep Crystal Polish following SwirlX but if you're chasing the ultimate shine, and you've got a dark colored car (your forum title mentions a black VW) then you may still want to use it.

Oh yes, always chasing the ultimate shine and keeping those swirls at bay.

So u/c with a yellow pad speed 5 followed by swirl x on a black pad speed 3 and dc02 black pad speed 3. And to finish nxt tech wax 2.0 2 coats by hand.

Also is best to leave nxt tech wax 2.0 on the car over night? I have never had the time with customers cars but would be good to do it with my own if it improves the depth and wetness . Then leave the 2nd coat on for 4-5hrs.

                      What do you think Michael?.

Leaving it on overnight is not going to gain you anything, and there is a potential downside. Any dust that may accumulate overnight is going be collected up in your wipe off process, which could pose an obvious problem. But leaving it on that long if it's a bit humid could also cause the hazed material on the surface to begin drawing moisture out of the air and create a streaking issue upon wipe off. Could. Lots of variables here, but the bottom line is you aren't going to gain anything in the process. Just make sure the NXT is good and dry before you wipe off - I have personally let it sit for 3 or 4 hours and wipe off was super easy. I don't notice any real visual improvement in doing this, however, but wipe off was effortless.

Same here Michael, I would wax the car then leave it to sit untill its dry. I'm sure someone he mentioned it a while back.
