  • Swirl X, Zymol Carbon and other questions

    Hello all,

I hope its OK to mention another products' name here.

I own a recently repainted car (little over a year) finished in British Racing Green.

I typically detail my car with a PC XP machine using an ecclectic mix of products that work well for me to remove the typical dark finish swirls (after a lot of experimenting)

    1) First I polish the car with Pinnacle XMT Intermidiate Swirl remover on orange pad-This product needs to be broken down and takes time as I spend 3-5 minutes per 2x2 section

    2) Second, I use Meguires Swirl X on a white pad. After spending some time in step one, I find that the Swirl X works well and extremely quickly as a follow finishing polish after the XMT without having to spend any time "breaking it down".

    3) Last I wax the car.

This is where I am stuck. Since I got my first car 10yrs ago I used Gold Class and have loved it ever since, however it does not seem to work well on this dark finish. Tried the NXT 2.0 and it was worse. A cloudiness all over the vehicle. Then I bought Auto Glym HD and still, no joy.

Today I am about to try Zymol carbon (after the above mentioned polishing process), simply because of its claims with dark finishes.

Please share your opinions on both my use of the Swirl X as a follow up to the Pinnacle XMT and my wax choices....

Is it Ok to use the Swirl X in this fashion?
What wax should I try on my dark car?? (other than the ones I already have)

    Thanks!!!

How are you applying, removing the wax? How long of a dry time?

That's odd that it is leaving a haze no matte what product you use. Personally, I have never had a problem with Gold Class or NXT. They both look great especially on dark colors. I did an SS Cobalt in black that looked great. The owner was amazed that I could achieve those results compared to the Turtle Wax Black that he had tried. He said that what I had done was so much better than his products. I agree what is your technique?

Hey guys, thanks for your replies.

With the Goldclass and the NXT 2.0 I have tried the gray, red, and blue pads on my PC XP at speed 3 or 4. Let it dry to a haze and remove with microfiber towels.

BTW, due to the risk of swirl marks, I never ever under any circumstances re-use microfiber towels on this car. For any job I use brand new towels and then those towels get washed and get used on my daily driver, but only new towels touch this car-I mention this just in case some one might assume the problem is dirty/used microfiber towels....

With the AutoGlym HD, I did it by hand, let it cure for 15 minutes as indicated and then removed with mf towels.....

I did not get a chance to try the Zymol Carbon today as I had other matters to attend to..

        Any advise is greatly appreciated

I would have a concern about applied too thick, or not let dry fully. Nxt 2.0 takes a bit longer than others.

Re: Swirl X, Zymol Carbon and other questions

You should have no issues at all using SwirlX as a follow up to a preliminary cleaning with any other product, so we don't think that's causing your issues.

Since you're getting basically the same type of uneven appearance when using a variety of waxes and sealants we're inclined to think you're using more product than you should and not allowing it to dry sufficiently before removal. You won't notice this so much on lighter colors, but on red, dark blue, black, BRG, etc it can be very noticeable.

With you being in Houston you've got a little bit of humidity to deal with , and that is going to prolong drying time of any wax. Since you're using a D/A to work on your car you should be able to lay down a very thin coat of any liquid wax, and that's really all you need. An ounce or two is all you need on a full sized car - or less. (seriously, click that link!!!)

So apply that nice thin and even coat of wax on all the painted surfaces of the car, then go have lunch. Or clean up the garage. Or fix that leaking faucet you're wife has been bugging you about. Give it as much as an hour to dry - as long as it's on nice and thin. It will wipe off with ease and you shouldn't have any unevenness to the finish, no cloudy or streaked appearance.
