  • Ultimate Quick Wax Question

    Greetings All,

I am new to the forum and new to car detailing (just my personal cars). I have a Jeep Cherokee that I have neglected that I want to try bring back to life. The paint is still in pretty good shape but it needs to be cleaned, clayed, etc. Due to time constraints it would be easiest for me to wash and clean the paint one weekend and then wash and clay the next. Would UQW be sufficient protection while I am going through these steps?

    Thanks

Unless the car sits in a garage, covered, IMO the outside contamination will need to be re washed off. So like if your daily driving the jeep, you will need to repeat the first 2 steps. No avoiding it.

you would want to clay the vehicle before you clean it.

          Re: Ultimate Quick Wax Question

If you need to split the whole process over a couple of weekends then do the wash/clay/UQW the first weekend and wash/paint cleaner/wax the next.

But unless your vehicle is heavily loaded with above surface bonded contaminants the claying process should be pretty quick. We did a project yesterday with a full sized Chevy Silverado quad cab that was badly contaminated. The picture below is after claying just the upper section of a single door (above the door protector at the beltline). Even so, it took less than 30 minutes to clay this whole truck.

The point being, your paint cleaning process is going to take much longer than claying, so you might want to split that process over a couple of weekends. Maybe the first weekend you wash/clay/paint clean half the vehicle/UQW the whole thing, then the following weekend wash/paint clean the other half/full wax the whole thing.

Thanks for the advice. I realized after I had posted that I had the steps in the wrong order. I had no idea how long it would take to clay the car given its age and lack of care. It sounds like I can do the whole process in a weekend. Then do a good wash and wax job the next weekend (with UQW in between).

I see what your saying now. For me I try to budget enough time for everything. IF the car has decent paint and the clay is just gliding, thats 99% perfect. Then its on to the paint correction.
